I've been a space-cadet all my life. I was diagnosed with ADHD in Kindergarten thou & the diagnoses got changed to ADD when I became older & wasn't as hyper. I imagined I was doing things in my daydreams as a kid that I picked up from TV shows & movies. The imagination in my daydreams kind of disappeared when I suffered a sever depression at 20 & spent the next 5 years on lots of psych meds. Now when I daydream I zone-out without having much going on except for replaying parts of a TV ep in my head over & over or replaying a conversation I had or something I did earlier over & over.

Nope. Not just you at all. People have been known to shake me back to reality. I frequently go off into my head. I like it there.

This sounds just like me, in fact I explain it like this a lot of the time to other people when they ask why I do it.

Plenty of people have this issue, I don't think it's just you.
For me, I have them but it's controllable.

Sorry, what was that? Spaced out for a sec there... ;-)

Yes, spacing out seems to be common with a lot of people on the spectrum. Receding into thoughts happens intermittently for me, and I've been wondering if it has anything to do with ADD. When my mind starts wandering and can't focus on anything that is when I tend to find I've completely spaced out for a second.

Following directions etc. can also be difficult for other reasons not necessarily associated with AS, have you looked into things like Dyslexia or CAPD? The presentations can be quiet similar at times.
