I have schizotypal personality disorder, autistic traits, ADHD, panic disorder, intermittent tics, and a tendency toward dissociation. That's why I'm posting here; this might not be autism-related.

Recently I've had this cluster of symptoms:
waking up suddenly
or waking very early, such as at 5am
intense confusion
panic attack (This has been here forever, but since it's co-occuring with the other symptoms, I thought I'd mention it.)
perceptual distortions; objects appear to be growing and shrinking
forgetting where I am in space; my room is the entire universe
severe inattention through the rest of the day
headaches

I've also noticed that I've been in a lousy mood recently. I'm on my period, so could it have to do with that? I can't honestly say I've experienced this before and I'm getting scared. Should I be concerned?

Oh those are called perceptual distortions?.....I get those to. But yeah honestly I have quite a few days kinda like that, so I guess I would not be too concerned unless these are new symptoms and they are severe to the extent its interfering a lot with things. I mean I am just more or less used to that kind of thing but I can imagine if you don't usually experiance those symptoms it would be rather hard to deal with.

ikr, new symptoms are always hard to deal with. Then we learn to manage them.

Apparently the scientific name for this is "Alice in Wonderland Syndrome", which doesn't remotely increase my comfort level. Apparently it's associated with migraines, brain tumors, psychoactive drugs... and the kissing disease. Or just a normal part of falling asleep. :?

Hmm well in my case I don't usually get migraines, I doubt I have a brain tumor, but I've done plenty of psychoactive drugs. But yeah do you mean all this happens when you're falling asleep......or do you get those symptoms during the day mostly? I've read from different websites and stuff that it is fairly normal to have some odd disturbances while going to sleep so if thats the only time its a real problem it's probably not something to be too worried about.....but if its bothering you then I guess I would say get it checked out.

I've never taken psychoactive drugs because I don't see a psychiatrist; I'm self-diagnosed based on a very legalistic reading of the DSM-IV. I get occasional migraines. I don't think I have a brain tumor. The AIWS occurs any time of day, but usually when I'm tired, and not very often. The other symptoms have occurred upon waking up.

well by psychoactive I did not nessisarly mean prescription......other then the occasional illegally obtained adderall in the past, but yeah I mean drugs in general all of which do have psychological effects. So yeah my perceptual distortions could be my fault, then again apparently even depression can cause some weird symptoms like that.

which was the AIWS? and if most of it occurs when you're tired the feeling tired itself could be a factor.....and I've always had some kind of weird sensations upon waking up, as far as I know its fairly normal. But there have been times when I wake up feeling like my conciousness is halfway out of my body like when I woke up things did not align quite right or something.

AIWS is shorthand for Alice In Wonderland Syndrome; the appearance of these growing and shrinking.

If the symptoms are that vague and can be that easily caused, then I won't worry about them.
Thanks for your input!

Well unless it starts causing you a lot of problems I wouldn't worry about it....I mean I am sure I could go to a psychologist and tell them about how sometimes things seem to be growing and shrinking or that the walls sometimes look like they are breathing, but it would be rather pointless since its not really causing me any problems.

I have had this before, and I have to say, I never ever did any illegal drugs. But funny thing is, the legal drugs are just as horrid and expensive as the legal ones.

Yes I learned that when I took anti-depressants, the way they effected me they might as well have been labeled psycho-pills, yeah that was not fun.

Sounds like some of your symptoms could be physical. I've said this before on this board, but do you have Lyme in your area? I'd get it checked out. Get the western blot.

What does the headache feel like?

I ask because I can get migraine headaches with aunt flo and they can sometimes be preceded or accompanied by visual distortions like flashing lights, things appearing to be larger or smaller than they are (I call it my Alice in Wonderland syndrome and some actually say that Lewis carol came up with the idea of 'through the looking' glass due to his migraine issues), feeling confused, feeling spacey and so on.

The headaches tend to be one sided with a sharp throbbing pulsing pain (usually in left temple and across the left side if the head in my case, sometimes going through the left eye). They last between 4 hours and 3 days. More often than not 9 to 12 hours is the average but they can leave you feeling washed out for a few days afterwards (some people get high energy levels following a migraine, I get wash out).

If not a migraine, I am not sure, maybe consult a dr?
