Is ADHD linked to violence? I ask this because exactley 5 years ago round my house this one lad who was 14 and had ADHD manhandeld his 12 or 11 year old brother and punched him a few times around the face.

Likewise with my brother we have had a few fights and my parents suspect my bro has ADHD.

Do you agree with me about my observation of the connection with violence and ADHD? I think some symtoms of violence as a result of ADHD mimic violent behaviour of people who are pycopaths, Bio Polar or even bordlerine personality disorder and of course even AS. this may lead misdiagnosis etc.......

I certainly haven't found that to be the case heuristically and the jury seems to be out in regards to whether or not there is a statistically significant link between ADHD and violence, it seems to be somewhat correlated in childhood ADHD briefly and is possibly more likely in people not receiving treatment for their ADHD but I wouldn't say that violence is universal or even prevalent in those with ADHD and I certainly wouldn't rely on it as a standard for diagnosis.

Well if an individual with ADHD is not given medication it would not suprise me that they would lash out with violence if pushed. ADHD is not an easy thing to live with

I certainly agree that ADHD is not an easy thing to live with, (I have pretty much every annoying symptom of ADHD and struggled with it much worse before I started taking medication) but I would think that anyone is capable of lashing out when pushed regardless of whether or not they have ADHD, I would be interested if anyone knew of scientific studies which could confirm or deny statistical significance either way.

The young lad that i mentioned earlier well he beat up his brother on a trampoline probably because his ADHD made him hyper and excited so he decided to fight to keep his attention intact so i still belive there is a correlation in 'delibretly' violent behaviour in individuals with the disorder. Sorry thats just my opinion with growing up with people that suffer from it. people with ADHD can't sit still for long either so that is another reason why they might get violent and hyperactive. Actually the hyperactivity aspect of ADHD as well could be another cause of violent behaviour in ADHD as well as the stress of having to live with it.............

may i also mention the that violence used on his brother was more extreme and savage since he nearly broke his own brothers ribs. My own brother also is suspected to have ADHD and belive me his violent tendancies and temper is worse than the average persons.

I can't belive you don't think violence has nothing to do with ADHD.

ADHD is one of the many reasons that somebody might act in a violent matter, but it is not the definitive reason people hurt one another. I say this because you bring up a good point, Jamesy, I have ADHD, and as a kid I beat alot of people up because fights kept me focused, my brain clear.

Medication is a better solution to combat inattention than fighting others, though.

ADHD has impulsiveness and emotional dysregulation as features, so it can sometimes result in violence. It doesn't specifically result in ADHDers necessarily being habitually violent.

If someone is constantly violent, it might be worthwhile to look into "conduct disorder."

It also probably depends on the subtype of ADHD - people with the inattentive variety are the opposite of hyperactive and impulsive. And violence with ADHD depends from person to person - personalities, comorbid disorders, and even age and gender can also be factors that can influence whether a person is violent.
