I have read from good source that the successful rate of suicide amongst those diagnosed with Asperger's is 0.6% (compared with normal people whose suicide rate is 0.01%). Does anyone know the successful suicide rate of other mental disorders (looking for anything really, but bipolar and schizophrenia I definitely have an interest in)?
I can't provide exact numbers (as I'm too tired to look them up at the moment) but bi-polar disorder, type I anyway, I believe, has a high suicide rate. Schizophrenia has a high death rate though that isn't all due to suicide. OCD has a lower than average suicide rate, which I find rather interesting and think it might be due to the extremely transient nature of the tormenting factors (when the ritual or intrusive thought is over, it's over and the person feels fine) and the fact that people with OCD tend to worry about others more than themselves, not due to some highly developed sense of empathy, but as a manifestation of the disorder. Rather than thinking "I want to die," a person with OCD is more likely to be occupied by the uncontrollable thought of "What if (whoever) dies?" and may even be prohibited form killing themselves by the disorder itself. For example, developing the sensation "If you kill yourself x bad thing will happen. In fact, if you even think about killing yourself, x bad thing will happen." And the OCD ultimately wins over any egotistical intentions.
