the dr told us that two of our sons have ADHD. The eldest is 15 and youngest 12

they have always been little buggers LOL but we did not know it was caused by a condition i am a bit worried that if they put the eldest on whiz, as the dr says it will put an end to his boxing careeer as obviously stimulants is banned and he lovz his boxing and it wold brake his hart if he could not do it no more and he i9s doing well at it

I found out i had aspergers years ago as i was a bit of a bad lad in me yoof but it has neva had any impact on me as i made good coin as a plasterer and now work the doors.

anybody know of alternative treatment for adhd as i think his teachers wont a quite life but he stands to make a lot more coin as a boxer than he would as a teacher or a professor or doctor.

Thanx for any advice in advance

If someone has ADHD doesn't mean he has to have medicines. People have lived for millennia and it's not like ADHD is something new. Your boy is not sick, he is another type of human.

ADHD doesn't go away, no need either. It could help his carreer as a boxer even, although the known issues with the label might be useful to find out what his are and work on those if necessary.

Especially for a fighter, knowledge of self and self-control is key to becoming great. Fights aren't just a physical battle, so mental prepping helps his carreer as a boxer but also as a person with an special challenge as ADHD.

Don't let anybody fool you this has just bad sides.

Have you tried talking to the one in charge of his boxing career? I mean you could try pushing it to let them know that he takes stimulants for medical reasons. If you have proof from the doctor saying that the meds are for a medical reason they can't have a reason to deny it. I would at least ask them their take on this because a medical condition such as ADHD... I mean its different if your son has ADHD. It would be helping him with his symptoms for it and not for boxing. There is no reason they should deny it if its for a medical kind of condition.

Other than that, I'm not really sure what else to say... if the medication would help him, as I said, you should talk to whoever is in charge and ask about a medical reason for taking medication. They can't deny him if he has to take it for that. If they do then I think it would go against the ADA... or whatever laws they have for discrimination. O.o

I have ADHD and I take medication for it... a stimulant. Stimulants for those with ADHD have a different affect than those who take them as steroids, if that's what you are referring too. Like I said, just ask and tell them about his ADHD...

There are other types of medication that can be used to treat ADHD. Strattera is one. It's in a completely different class.

No, having ADHD isn't necessarily an end to boxing. At 15 though I can hardly imagine him being completely set on what his future career is. At 34 I'm still trying to figure out mine...

Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor...

Out of interest, what weight class will your boy end up fighting in?

I used to box in NSW Golden Gloves but was an also ran.

Make sure he gets a trade as well as a back up plan and keep him off the meds.

You might be right that both kids are just bored in school and the teachers are trying to palm em off on meds. If he is disciplined in the boxing and will be OK in an apprenticeship bin the meds.

Anyway, I also have ADHD so I take concerta. It's a stimulant though... so I don't know how it would help anyway.

I've no knowledge of boxing, but think this is something to talk to the sport's governing body or the anti doping authorities about. In other sports there are exceptions to banned substances lists for genuine medical reasons.
