friends are not family members, acquaintances at work. or people you know through proximity such as neighbours or classmates
for example, the kid in class you talk to each class, have you ever gone away on an overnight trip as friends? no, then they are an aquaintance you know as you sit beside them, not friends
I'd say my only 'friend' is my wife. Before I met her (when I was 19), I had no real friends (I played video games with some kids, stuff like that, but no 'friends' - no one I could be perfectly honest with, etc.). Now I have 1, at least.
