I personally feel that mental illness is a psychological or behavioral pattern generally associated with subjective distress or disability that occurs in an individual, and which is not a part of normal development. The disorder may consist of a combination of affective, behavioural, cognitive and perceptual components. Some examples are anxiety, OCD (Obsessive-compulsive disorder, Bi-polar, Schizophrenia etc... I was curious what you define as a mental illness.

If someone feels like I do they are mentally ill...but yeah I define it as anything that distrupts ones life in a negative way.

"Neurosis" is an outdated term that is no longer used diagnostically. Not being critical, just noting that.

As for my definition of MI...it would be something along the lines of a psychological and/or behavioural issue that causes impairment, distress and maladaptive behaviours.

It's amazing how your personal feelings on the subject mirror Wikipedia's word-for-word!

A mental disorder or mental illness is a psychological or behavioral pattern generally associated with subjective distress or disability that occurs in an individual, and which is not a part of normal development or culture. Such a disorder may consist of a combination of affective, behavioural, cognitive and perceptual components.

I would say that mental illness is the term given to people who's behavoir does not fit in well with what most of society expects or prefers.

I pretty much do what the APA tells me to: it's not a disorder until it negatively affects the sufferer (until the subject becomes the sufferer?) or imposes on the happiness of others. Doesn't matter how out there you are, if you can keep it quiet and be happy, go for it.

Thinking differently enough to change the way you respond to the outside world in a way that disrupts your life developmentally in physical or mental areas and brings some kind of pain unintentionally.

Thought and behaviour patterns than either interfere with your daily life or sometimes severely interfere with your life.

Having bad thoughts that lead to bad feelings and the feelings affecting the way you go about live , also affecting the way you react to yourself and other people. Engaging in unhelpful behaviours , when you have to change your thoughts if you feel your thoughts are guiding you and controlling you , rather than you being in control of them.
