Is there a good name for this? Is there anything that can be done for it?

This is called Dysthemia, a chronic form of low grade depression/irritabality. Usually manifested as depression but it can just be a generally dysphoric mood. dysphoria is the medical term for a bad mood.

Thanks. I think stress and lack of sleep play a part though I must admit that I am increasingly finding people annoying and undependable. I have this sudden urge to hit some people on top of the head and tell them to shut up that I have yet to give in to. I don't think I like myself when I am like this but I don't know how to suddenly find people to be less annoying when they're always in the act of being annoying. I suppose it has to come from within where I show some patience or have a change in perspective. Either that or live as far away from people that I possibly can. Does anyone have this problem where other people can greatly influence your mood?

People don't influence my mood. However, my mood does influence how I see other people.
I have "double depression" (Major Depression on top of underlying Dysthymia) and before I knew what dysthymia was, just considered myself to be a complete realist... always preparing for the worst and acknowledging the bad in everything.

I've noticed how hungry I am has a huge effect on my bad moods.
If I'm starving, I'm impossible to deal with.
And it's not just about getting food in me to feel better, but the right food.

This could be hypoglycemia. I get horrible when I don't eat right and it's all about the blood sugar. A MD would be able to tell you more.

When I'm really tired, I can potentially bite your head off.
