I'm curious what people think the statistics are of those with Aspergers/Autism being mistakenly diagnosed with a psychological disorder or vice versa (those with a psychological disorder being diagnosed mistakenly with Aspergers/Autism).

I don't think any research has been done on that.

I do know many later-diagnosed AS went through a long period of being diagnosed with something else that either a) only described part of their problems (depression and anxiety disorders are common here), or b) superficially resembled their particular presentation of AS (such as a schizophrenia spectrum condition when they don't have psychotic features).

Personally, I didn't have any misdiagnoses (although my teachers certainly tried hard enough to get me one). I did have a diagnosis that only explained part of my problems - PTSD. I do genuinely have PTSD, but that's not why I struggle with social interactions and generally act weird.

I agree with your posting Ettina and think the same.

I had a period were I got missdiagnosed (eventhough I was already diagnosed with ASD in the past). But I also had huge gender issues (I'm transgender and transitioned by now) and also severe anxiete issues of shrinks.

The shrinks told me I would have a delusion or Borderline PD, because of my gender issues and also because of my ASD symptoms. This lead to an anxiety issue of psychiatrists I had at that time and didn't help at all to cope with that situation.
After I transitioned noone said stuff like this anymore.

So it was partly because of ASD at that time, but not totally. What happened to me was mostly transphobe.

The thing is that many psychiatrists know very little about ASD and how to diagnose it correctly.

I've been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder. I've been on anti-depressants in the past.

I began to strongly suspect that I have Asperger's 3 or 4 months ago. ASDs run in my extended family (nephew, cousins kid, etc.) and I strongly suspect most of my immediate family display strong autistic spectrum traits even if none of them have been or would be diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

I've scored consistently in the "very high" or "very like an Aspie" categories of online Asperger's tests. Most of the cognitive, communication and behavioural traits fit as well.
