I have recently been diagnosed Asperger's, and have long known I have GAD and depression.
I've been on numerous medications over the years, including some of the SSRI's some of the older anti psychotics, and some of the atypical anti depressants.
Some of them have helped in the short to medium term, but some of them have made things worse.
I've come to the conclusion that I often only need half the "normal dose" to get a good effect, and to have more than this will cause problems, such as increased agitation, risk of side effects, or risk of addiction.

At present due to a tick bite I am taking a number of medications that have a calmative effect, but other than that I would generally stay clear.

What I find does help, is having a good exercise routine, taking multi vitamins, watching my diet, and trying not to get overstimulated.
I've also found that reading in bed just before sleep helps to put my mind in a better place for a peaceful night's sleep.
Also some quiet ambient music as I drift off helps.

Drugs can be useful, especially for severe symptoms, or short term solutions to help you cope when things get too much, but as you said there are not a magical solution.
Don't discount the efficacy of herbal supplements and remedies too; though they may seem to be less effective or have less strong ingredients, hops, St Johns wort and the like can be very beneficial, but best to discuss this with a doctor or naturopath, rather than try to guess your way to an effective solution.

You're far from alone, many of us on the spectrum have a tendency towards anxiety - I think it just goes with the territory, and with the over thinking we tend to do.
Just make sure you don't accept that taking meds the rest of your life is a viable option if you don't try others as well.
We're all individuals, and what works best for some make not work so well for others, and vice versa.

I get really tired of psychiatrists feeding up drugs when a lot of the time there no better than a sugar pill. There are cheaper ways of relieving anxiety other than Valium and trazodone. I been drinking a good bit of chamonile tea lately, as well as taking fish oil supplements. I'm a lot less anxious and have been in a better mood.

i've also been prescribed medicines, albeit different ones than you describe and feel no different effect than taking a placebo, meaning no effect at all.

My point exactly! if there's a more natural and cheaper way of relieving anxiety, why not use those remedies?

I never been on those meds but I do have GAD as well as OCD, panic issues & various other anxiety related things. I ben on various meds in the past for 5 years for various mental things but quit them 5 years ago & found I still had anxiety problems. After having anxiety problems in my 2nd relationship(I had lots of anxiety issues in my 1st relationship & after things ended because of it it I feel into a psychotic depression & spent next 5 years on meds) & I did NOT want to go that route again) I did abit of research on anxiety medication & herbal things. I tried afew herbal things that didn't help; Skullcap which is kind of a nerve tonic made me hyper, 5HTP & St.Johns Wart made me more emotionally sensitive. I decided to try Buspar which is the only med (least in the US) specially approved for anxiety instead of other issues. It helps my anxiety aLOT but not the non anxiety aspects of my OCD; after research I tried Neurontin & the combination is working quite well for me. The biggest issue I still have is that I get claustrophobic like when I'm on a crowded or noisy bus.. I talked to my GP & she gave me a prescription for Klonopin to take as needed which is usually when I'm going out & think I might be on a bus that could be crowded. I only take half a pill for that but I ocisonally take a whole if something happens that really stresses me out but that's rare; like traveling 2 days by Greyhound to see my family & something during the ride happens or being busy most o the time I'm there helping my parents with chores & then packing my stuff to ship.

I've have GAD and Panic Disorder. For those I've been prescribed Propranolol/Inderol - which worked great, but they're being taken off me. I've also tried Celexa, which was useless, and Prozac, which is also useless, but according to my doc. both are supposed to work miracles.

I'm trying to persuade them to give me a Remeron script.

I tried Remeron & I had horrible side effects. I was constantly tired & hungry. I slep over half the day & when I wasn't sleeping I was eating. I would sleep for afew hours, wake up& eat abit & a couple hours latter go back to sleep & repeat the cycle. I also had some stomach cramps. I tried Inderol & I got sick because my blood pressure got to low. I was on Prozac for abit but it got switched back to Lexapro. I don't recall any majorly bad problems with either. I was on othwr psych meds at the time including antipsychotics & mood stabalyzers.
