I have a diagnosis of Asperger's and ADHD and I am considering getting medicated for my ADHD which I am seeing someone about, has anyone else got medicated for ADHD for the first time in their 20s and would you say is has benefited you having been medicated?

It is Asperger's not Asperger's.

I was first diagnosed with ADD (inattentive type) when I was about 8 or 9 and took ritalin for it until sometime in middle school- don't remember much about the effects, but my mom said it worked wonders for my concentration and organization issues. For some reason I became less tolerant of stimulants as I got older (Concerta in particular makes me feel very wired and restless, then causes me to crash as it wears off), but I find that Ritalin still works okay if I need a short boost for something like studying or working on a paper. Different things work for different people, though.

If you have any mood disorder issues I advise you to tell your doctor about it before they medicate you.

I was medicated in my mid 20s and I didn't realise I had a mood disorder. Well, Ritalin gave me euphoria and over time turned into bipolar disorder. I'm now off it and the moods haven't ceased.

I'm just here to warn you. Not everyone experiences what I do but it is common.

I agree.
Also some autistics react sensitive to certain kind of meds so that I recoment to start with a low dosage to see if you tolerate it well.

I will mention that to the psychiatrist when I see him.

For the people who have been medicated in what ways does it help?

Cheers for the info by the way.

I started taking ADHD meds as a 24yo, now as a 30yo I have to get back on them or go live under a bridge or something. lost my job because of it, productivity is down to zero. do what you have to do to keep your head above the water :/

if you can live and work without it though, you might not need them.

It has benefited me, but it has had its drawbacks too. I don't think I could do engineering without them, but it wears me out after a while and I will start crashing and experience fatigue if I take them for too long without a break. What scares me is all the long-term side effects that people report. I strongly recommend checking out addforums if you want to learn about people's experiences with them, both positive and negative. Regardless of what you choose, I recommend a healthy diet and exercising as much as possible. I've discovered that if I take the time to exercise, my increased productivity more than makes up for the time spent exercising (plus I feel better too).

Edit: if you are talking about SSRI type meds like Strattera, then no, they did not benefit me. They sucked quite badly actually.
