1. My compulsions seriously began to impact my life about a year ago. They were occasionally based around "symmetry" (see here if you don't know what those are: http://www.psychforums.com/obsessive-co ... 09449.html), but they mostly required me to memorize sets of information from pages of books to definitions to entire webpages.

2. Other compulsions spring up in fairly standard occasions, I think, when I'm in a situation where I could potentially put myself at harm. For example, recently I was on an exercise machine (treadmill), and had to stop using it because my compulsions to turn the speed dial up were too strong. I'm not talking about "wanting to push", I mean turning the dial up to a point where I would probably be flung off and seriously injure myself. The compulsion doesn't seem to be about hurting myself whatsoever, though. It's more the actual actions of turning the speed up and then running.

Has anyone else experienced this? Stories and advice are appreciated.

Not to the extent you describe. I wonder if it's the adrenaline rush that comes with risk taking that leads to those thoughts. Are you attracted to extreme sports? :chin:

Maybe, but I experience adrenaline rushes other times throughout the day (athletics), and those don't cause these kind of compulsions whatsoever. In fact, during these times I feel calmer than in everyday life.

On extreme sports: no, I'm not attracted to them at all. In fact, I don't even like roller coasters... 8O
