ASD and a psychiatric diagnosis

This is a question for those who were first diagnosed with bipolar,major depression,schizophrenia etc . Especially those who were adults by the time the autism spectrum was broadened to include aspergers.
How difficult has it been to get your autistic/ NVLD symptoms/traits recognised ?
If you have not been able to get them recognised or recognised a little but told "Not that there's much we can do " how has this impacted on your functioning/recovery?
