What does it mean when a doctor asks a patient if they've looked up the diagnostic criteria for something?

Does it mean the doctor thinks the patient is faking?

Not necessarily, it can just mean that they want to know if a person already has knowledge of a particular condition. It's entirely contextual.

Agreed it's mostly going to a be a benign question put by doctors, but not every time. A specialist my older sister saw for a problem she has used it as part of a condescending accusation of why 'she wasn't in pain' and didn't have a certain condition she suspected. That, without even the medical grounds to back it up.

It is probably to save some time as well, if a person has looked up conditions and has an idea themselves of what they might have, surely its better for the doctor to know the persons opinion, as long as they are well informed.
