I have read studies that there is a correlation and other studies that say that having austism can prevent Alzheimer's / dementia.

What has everyone else read?

I have read that as well. It may have something to do with other studies that have shown that there is an overabundance of synapses in autistic brains, thus creating connections that can compensate for the death of others (synapses).
