I'm bi, but prefer women. But it seems that the concept of gaydar just vanishes around me - I don't appear queer at all to anyone (everyone I've told is incredibly surprised), and I find it impossible to discern who might be into girls. I'm wondering whether it's because recognizing people's sexuality is a matter of locating certain markers of identity. Is it possible that gaydar is all about recognizing the social cues that elude me? Or should I just forget about the whole thing and flirt with whomever I'm interested in?

i was born sans gaydar also. i don't believe it can be taught, in the same manner that music cannot be taught to the tone-deaf.

Honestly, my 'gaydar' is purely based on stereotypes (perhaps due to a lack of whatever innate sense other people have). Men with plucked eyebrows, flamboyant speech and body language (especially excessive hand movement) and, what appears to be, an exceptionally well-developed sense of fashion usually appear gay to me. I'd say, It's sometimes accurate. There's always going to be people who don't fit that in the slightest (or are even the exact opposite), but you're bound to get them right once in a while. For women; shorter hair cuts, occasionally tattoos, more masculine or unisex clothing, perhaps more piercings and a more monotone voice sometimes leads me to assume they're bisexual or lesbian. Of course, there's women like Amber Heard, who don't fit that at all. Anyway, both of those descriptions are just your stereotypical gay/lesbian characters you might see in movies or on tv and a lot of the time, they've helped me better assess someone's sexuality if I'm unsure. Also, apologies is this comes across as insensitive in any way, like I'm saying gay people lack individuality or anything, because that's certainly not a belief of mine, especially coming from the most pro-gay state in America.
