There's another reason for me not to go into the chat room.

I'm new, and have never been on chat, but...

THAT'S HORRIBLE!

I may not be LGBT, but I have relatives and friends who are, so it horrifies me that people are saying such things!

I feel bad for those who had to deal with that *censored*.

Yea, that chat room is just filled with narcissists and everyone has an opinion like they do an as*hole. You can be offended by the smell or leave the room. I choose to stay far away and bring my opinions to places I think they would be appreciated!

Which chat room, Azzazzel?
Do you mean #wrongplanet specifically or IRC chat in general?

Although #wrongplanet is outside our remit as Wrong Planet moderators you should still report homophobic comments to the channel operators there, who I know will deal with it very quickly.

IRC chat in general is unmoderated and can be an extremely unpleasant experience for anyone.

I don't know exactly what the OP is talking about, but I do think WP's chatroom is horrible. The crowd there seems to be a completely different kind from the forum crowds. The forum people are generally good people. The chatroom, when I visited it, was full of strange, immature, nasty kinds of people though they didn't happen to be talking about gay trans etc when I was there. I thought it was all unruly teenagers or something. I will never go there again.

Wrong Planet is a moderated support forum; the #wrongplanet chat room is not a support environment - it's intended for a different type of user.

IRC channels tend to attract a different type of crowd to forums and the general behaviour is always likely to be somewhat rowdy. That said, there are still boundaries to what is considered acceptable and if something causes concern on #wrongplanet, the channel operators should be informed.

I went on chat a couple of times and didn't like the fowl language, but I didn't stay on long enough to catch any unruly behavior besides that. I just hated being put under a random user and not mine COULDN'T STAND IT! I felt like I was being put under a false identity.

AIUI all IRC chatrooms will automatically assign a random nick if one wasn't given by the user.

But are you referring to #wrongplanet?
If so, this might be of some use: http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt223886.html

My experience has been that most chatrooms, anywhere, tend to be a bit rough-and-tumble. They seem the place where many go to let their Shadow Side come out to play, saying things that could not be said elsewhere. So I avoid them. Or if not that, recognize that I should best leave as soon as my blood pressure goes up or my emotions get involved.
