So I have been on Tumblr (I have been questioning for years) but I see that everyone is something other than straight now and even the straights say they are grey a, bi/pan/hetero/homo romantic or demisexual and things like that. I don't have anything against them but I am quickly learning that there are now more sexual orientations than I can keep track off. What I notice in forums is many people like me don't know what they are and these things confuse us because many people can fit different ones depending on what mode they're in. Is it sort of like a Tumblr thing (esp for 15-17 year olds) to say these things to fit in on Tumblr?

I think it's because there are still relatively few spaces where LGBTQ kids can feel welcome. So they congregate on that website and others to share in community, because they are too young to go to gay and lesbian club nights or go to a local queer friendly 'village' area in their local city.

As a minority feminist I've found a lot of good stuff on Tumblr as well. There are a lot of social activists here who can help with learning to think about social topics ranging from gay issues to race relations.

i've never been on tumblr but it seems to me it would be a safe haven of sorts. it can be quite welcoming.

of course, what you follow is what you see.

At Tumblr I don't feel as unwelcome as I do on other social media like Facebook, DeviantArt or gaming websites I used to visit.

I am a butch tomboy and gender nonconforming, it is called gender queer I am pretty sure.. I am an artist, also do a little photography, and used to game a lot. On DeviantArt people are less capable of comprehending or accepting the existence of female nerds and unfeminine females, at least ones like me that like BattleTech, martial arts and military stuff. At DeviantArt these days I let people think I am male, because they automatically assume it, and so many of them get confused if I say I am female but my gallery has 'masculine interests' content like military planes and engines. I get tired of having to explain myself over and over, and sometimes losing 'fans' because they start to think I am a freak. On DeviantArt I have encountered quite a few issues of people showing animosity and disgust toward my drawings of unfeminine female characters. On DeviantArt it was easy to find artistic people, but not easy to find accepting or like minded people.

At gaming websites I used to visit, people would either hit on me endlessly, or get angry at me and tell me I'm a fake or I don't belong there once they find out I am female. Those gamer places enraged me at times.

Someone from DA got me into Tumblr because they left DA and put their gallery on Tumblr. I slowly got interested in the site and found out there were lots of things to explore in it. I noticed there were lots of blogs by autistic people, then I found out some of them were nerdy females who were not gender conforming, and there are quite a few informative blogs on autism, introverts, androgyny, masculine of center, gender dysphoria and so on. Well, I found my tribes!! ! Even though I am horrible at communicating and barely ever speak to anyone I follow on Tumblr (for fear of making an ass of myself, which I am so good at doing, sadly), I found a huge amount info resources there and I feel a WHOLE LOT less alienated because there are so many other people similar to me, some struggling with the same unique issues I have or have had, all around the world that I find on Tumblr.

There's no concrete answer, but what Esoteric said would make sense.
I didn't figure out I was aromantic/asexual from Tumblr (rather, from a mix of my friend, AVEN, and deviantART), but it sure helped me find fellow aces... and so after realizing how large the community is on there, I now tend to post excessive amounts of GSRM (LGBT) stuff.

I also think that Tumblr is the first place people are hearing about certain orientations and seeing them accepted, so they feel safe experimenting. Some people are questioning and just trying on different labels, and on Tumblr, they're not going to get into much trouble, unlike in real life where they could be bullied for questioning or being openly non-heterosexual.

I can't speak for other LGBT people but a lot more people out there than you would think have a touch of queerness to them, maybe a little bicuriousity, maybe a little bit of gender incongruence. Tumblr is a place where people can be themselves, or become someone else in a safe-ish space.

Depends what you mean.

If you're looking at someone's blog and it has an about page that says something like: "14, demigirl, fae/faer/faeself pronouns, etc..." it's because they're a narcissistic little kid making things up to get attention.

I only found this out yesterday by reading a blog that calls them out, and one of the people this blog called out replied with "yes you can so too choose to be trans".

A lot of them also pretend to be autistic.
