I would bet that most people on WrongPlanet are not into "conversion therapy" to make gay people straight.

"Conversion therapy" is certainly ridiculous.

I am glad to see that b/c I consider myself a scientist and that "science" seemed manufactured to me. It's a spectrum after all. WE know that.

big·ot
noun
a person who is intolerant toward those holding different opinions. (Oxford)

a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices. (Merriam Webster)

That aside, Fnord, you do tend to employ manipulative tactics to "win" debates, and do not always argue in good faith. You are very clever. But you're not always as right as you think you are. You are occasionally a bit of a bully, and use threats of admin action or words like "slander" to intimidate others into inaction, if called out on your behavior.

You may not be a bigot, but it's not like your hands are completely clean, either.

As for the original topic...

Much like when it comes to autistics, where there's too much talk being done by people who aren't autistic, and not enough talk with those who actually are - there's far too much talk from people who are not trans or have otherwise never experienced it, doing the talking, with nobody actually talking to the trans people themselves. And I don't mean here on this post, but in the greater scientific community in general. One of the bigger complaints in the trans community is the fact that they seldom get to tell their own story - its non-trans people telling their interpretations of the trans experience, rather than letting trans people speak for themselves. Or non trans people playing trans people in movies. Not unlike non autistics talking for autistics, or NT's playing autistics in movies.

If you want to know about trans people, talk to trans people. They're the ones who know best what their own life is like. Rather than take other people's word for it, talk to families who actually have trans kids, and see how they actually live.

So lemme get this right: A bigot is someone whose science-based opinions are at odds with popular belief, right?

Science-based opinions?

The overwhelming scientific consensus (American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, Endocrine Society, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, World Health Organization, National Association of Nurse Practitioners, Mayo Clinic, etc. etc. etc.) is that gender and sex are nonbinary, and transgender people are real and valid and transgender medical treatments are a positive and beneficial thing.

If someone wants to ignore that overwhelming scientific consensus in favor of some bible-thumpy think tank, then yes I would call that person a bigot, no matter how "science-based" he was pretending to be.

I must admit I find the 50+ possible genders hard to understand . I can accept they're real for people , but what makes a person a certain gender is something I struggle with . Are the 50+ genders primarily about freedom of expression , or is there a scientific basis to them?

For me although I readily accept I'm physically male, mentally it's a lot more unclear . I struggle to identify with other males , but also,to a lesser extent , struggle to identify with females . Perhaps it could be said I struggle to identify with other people in general .

I'm a fairly dysfunctional male that would make a fairly dysfunctional female .

Parents not allowing their trans children to transition is child abuse. I wish that there were puberty blockers when I was going into puberty. Unfortunately, that was during the 1980s.

I have no idea where people get the 50+ gender thing from. My current understanding is Male, Female, Agender and Non-binary that exists somewhere in the middle, and most cases people may exist anyway somewhere in the middle on a spectrum, but just use the name for what is closest. Non-binary also has people trying to express the different ways it is experienced, such as gender fluid and bigender. I have also heard of Demiboy and Demigirl, which I think is if they feel slightly towards a gender.

It's because different cultures have different words for their non-binary people, and there's a lot of nuance between them. You can't just put white western enbies, Indian hijras, native American two-spirits, Oaxacan muxhe, Thai kathoey, etc. etc. in the same big box marked "third gender" and act like they're all the same thing because they aren't. So clearly there are way more than three genders, and denying this can be considered a form of racism.

Puberty blockers seem accepted by science and modern medicine for a number of purposes, transgender children being just one,I see no reason the view puberty blockers as child abuse if they are used properly.

According to Dr. Michelle Cretella, president of the American College of Pediatricians, "Our bodies declare our sex. Biological sex is not assigned. Sex is determined at conception by our DNA. It is stamped into every cell of our bodies."

"Human sexuality is binary. There are at least 6500 genetic differences between men and women. Hormones and surgery cannot and do not change this. An identity is not biological, it is psychological. Identity has to do with thinking and feeling. Thoughts and feelings are not biologically hardwired. Our thinking and feeling may be factually right or factually wrong."

"When supported in their biological sex through natural puberty, the vast majority of gender-confused children get better," she explained. "Yet, we are chemically castrating gender-confused children with puberty blockers. Then, we permanently sterilize many of them by adding cross-sex hormones."

Dr. Cretella is convinced that far from releasing children into who they were "made to be", such treatments actually constitute "institutionalized child abuse".

"Let's be clear. To indoctrinate all children from pre-school forward with the lie that they could be trapped in the wrong body disrupts the very foundation of a child's reality testing. If a child can't trust the reality of their physical bodies, who or what can they trust? Transgender ideology in schools is psychological abuse that often leads to chemical castration, sterilization and surgical mutilation. If that's not child abuse, ladies and gentleman, what is?"

Also according to Dr. Michelle Cretella...

• Studies on twins prove no one is born "trapped in the body of the wrong sex".
• Gender identity is malleable, especially in young children.
• Puberty blockers for gender dysphoria have not been proven safe.
• There are no cases in the scientific literature of gender-dysphoric children discontinuing blockers.
• Cross-sex hormones are associated with dangerous health risks.
• Neuroscience shows that adolescents lack the adult capacity needed for risk assessment.
• There is no proof that affirmation prevents suicide in children.
• Transition-affirming protocol has not solved the problem of transgender suicide.
• The Transition-Affirming Protocol is child abuse.

Bottom line: Is this bigotry or science?

I am surprised someone as liberal as you would support this article,it seems a bit out of charactor for you,but it certainly doesn't surprise me if your just playing devils advocate.

Some parents of children with lower IQs want to use puberty blockers to keep their children, children. Parents who have accepted their child has a disability, have a difficult time when the child reaches puberty and an effort is made to keep them as child like as possible which could include puberty blockers.

Biological sex matters for human reproduction.

Does expressing the opinion above make me a transphobic bigot?

Only if you declare it to be true.

There was a thread here started a few years back by someone who wanted advice on puberty blockers for her child with Down Syndrome.  She became very upset with anyone who even hinted that it was probably not a good idea.  She stopped posting shortly thereafter.
