Maybe someone's already suggested this, but apparently in police reports, if they can't identify someone as a man or a woman (they're not allowed to ask, at least not in Ottawa) they refer to that person as "shim."

It's probably already been mentioned but the reason people feel "it" is insulting is because "it" is most commonly used to refer to inanimate objects so it is like calling someone not human to call them "it." Aliens in movies are also often referred to as "it." And, of course, there's the ever present conception that being different is bad.

I happen to like the word it. Gender segregation has always seems utterly pointless to me, outside of reproduction. Its like defining race to be only African and Caucasian, applying a limited understanding of the stereotypes to rocks, then getting mad and confused when people don't like the rocks you think they should like.

"That Person", You, They, person, It, are all pronouns that I like.

Maybe they simply don't care about you enough to cater to your wishes. Get them to care, and maybe they'll do it.

The English language needs proper gender-neutral pronouns that don't reduce people to the level of inanimate objects. There have been a few propositions, but until they catch on and become common usage, it is sadly impossible for a polite person to refer to genderqueer or agender people without assigning a sex to them.
