Don't you hate it when a member of your family says "that's so gay" and you call them out on it, but then they say "gay means happy" as a stupid, false excuse? It's really annoying.

Get back at them by telling them that they look so "gay" whenever they seem happy, and use the same explanation when they protest.

Or you could remark "that's so faggoty" and that will shut them up forever, because every time they say something is gay, they will remember that it's faggoty, and that makes them look bad.

I hate it when that happens. My kid sister is really bad for saying that. One time, I got back at her when she was in a really good mood. I told her that she seemed to be very gay. She got mad at me.

Or cigarettes if you use 'fag'.

In fact, I call cigarettes as such quite often.

I'm not easily offended, but it gets on my nerves when someone calls something "gay" and defensively insists that he didn't mean it "that way." Like back when Eminem defended his tendency to call people "fags" by claiming that to him, it didn't necessarily mean gay people. You don't get to hijack an insulting word and claim that you're using it to describe Group A and not Group B, when the majority of the world uses it to insult Group B. Try using any other popular insult some time and see if you get away with it by insisting that you didn't mean it "that way."

Apparently 'gay' is the most common insult used by children in the UK: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/7289390.stm

I have found this advice useful (link):

Quote:
Over the years, I have called out plenty of kids (and a few adults) for saying "that's so gay." Though many respond positively, more than a few have said, "I didn't mean that it [the romantic comedy, family vacation or whatever else is in question] is homosexual. I'm saying that it's happy." This excuse is usually given by someone who is embarrassed to be caught saying something inappropriate. My response tends to be, "Come on, we both know that you weren't calling the romantic comedy happy. I'm sure you can think of a better way to say you weren't into it."

i actually still use gay to mean happy and so does my littlest sister but the other 2 still say thats so gay. the littlest gets that using someones sexual identity as a slur is wrong but the other 2 dont. their defence is everyone says it. same for everyone else. when they say thats so gay i usually say something along the lines of "well this thing doesnt really make me feel happy or homosexual and i know you couldnt possibly be linking someones orientation with all that is scummy now could you?" they always give me this look. it really bugs me especially since one of my sisters knows im queer. its just really awkward and demeaning.

Because a common thing in my school is to say "that's so gay" etc, I actually don't mind it, at all. :P They don't use 'gay' in the context of 'a homosexual person', it's now just... common slang.

I was literally just about to ask if you spoke Cymraeg, I'm trying to learn it at the moment, but it's still in the really, really, really pathetic stages. :(

8) We definitely need more Welsh speakers. Don't worry, everybody has to start at the really, really, really pathetic stages. I'm currently learning/murdering the German language.

EDIT: Do you live in Wales YourMother?

You could tell em that the word Gay is slang for Lame & no longer slang for happy. They may be ignorant & don't think there's anything wrong sense they think gay meaning happy sounds nice

i dont know about that. wheen i was little the only context i heard the word gay used in was as happy. then i moved schools and i heard people saying thats so gay and asked what they meant. they did not say it means bad they said it means guys who like guys and bad. they linked the 2 together. thats so gay was my first exposure to the concept of homosexuality. in some contexts when used by the older people it is clear that they are specifically refering to homosexuality.

I'm sure it's different in different areas, but over here, gay can mean 'lame/bad/etc' or 'a homosexual person'. It means both, sure, but over here I've never met anyone intolerant to gays, even though almost EVERYONE will use the phrase "that's so gay" etc. They just mean "that's so lame", but it's such common slang to say "gay" - nobody I've met means it in a way as "that's so gay, THUS any gay person is completely lame because I'm specifically referring to homosexuals". It's almost like a word with a double-meaning over here, so I don't mind it. I'm not explaining myself properly, I don't think... :P I Although I can see how some people would be offended.

Heh. Was watching telly at the weekend with my parents and there was a goshawk. The three of us simultaneously: "but is it gay?" :) Gets used a lot in folk songs.
