In Canada of all places. Last night a gay activist named Raymond Taavel was beaten to death outside of a gay bar in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I know nothing of the victim--never heard of him until today. The man charged was in a mental hospital (he had a day pass to leave, but didn't return when he should have), so it wasn't purely a homophobic killing. But there are reports that a gay slur was used. Very sad and rather frightening.

The story is receiving coverage here and here, among many other places.

I hope he didn't suffer too much.

If theyre mental how/why do they get a day pass without anyone supervising them?

They thought he was more stable than that I guess. They are now reviewing the process by which day passes are given.

People in mental hospitals can come and go pretty freely if they're on open wards, at least here in Finland
