It's Tennessee, where even dogs who are suspected of homosexuality aren't safe - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/3 ... 90537.html

Wow. At risk? Ok, I've been a part of the system for awhile and I can reason that "at risk" could refer to how the gay boy gets picked on by the jocks or outcast tough. But... we've all been aware of and fighting this for years. In my experience, teachers have been watching out for their students since the beginning of time however, there have been many, well documented abuses. (football coaches... uber-Zealot teachers... pigs...) I can see where this law will only cost the state of TN more money in lawsuits. The next time a kid gets beat up because some hetero feels threatened by his presence, having not reported his gayness will be cause to bump up the award.

I could see laws criminalizing bullying in general, but singling out homosexuals is just so wrong.

Will the parents be required to tell the teacher if they suspect their child is gay? Because, everyone should know and be aware of what Johnny likes to do with his little wee wee.

I can see where such a law would lead to even more abuse.

Some teacher will tell a gay boy that he can either "cooperate" with the teacher or get reported.

Some bullies will tell weaker student to hand over their lunch money, cell phones, jewelry (et cetera) or be "outted" to the authorities.

I'm sure others can think of more.

It's not going to happen. How is anyone going to enforce that, and who will monitor - the principals? Doubt it. Assumptions are assumptions and it's common for a child to question his/her sexuality, even if they end up heterosexual. We are people, afterall, who don't NEED to be forced into some "slot".

I think this invades privacy. I would be very angry if it happened to me and would not feel safe at school feeling like the teacher betrayed me. If it triggered a bad reaction from the parents it would not help but hurt the child. Th is law could makethings for for some students. The intent is not bad but how could such go well or as intended? I am happy that the 'gay' dog was rescued.

Simple - it's a culturally conservative state with a large bloc of fundamentalist Christians that is currently trending even further to the right. As any political consultant could tell you: a little homo-bashing never hurts a politician in the South. It's a tradition older than the republic itself: to play to ignorant people's fears & to score cheap political points by attacking an unpopular, marginalized group that lacks the political power to fight back.
