At work, for the last few weeks, at least one day of the week, someone will bring up Amanda Simpson. I work in a small office that in the US Army civil service falls underneath her.

Here is her wikipedia page -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanda_Simpson

It started when my supervisor posted an org chart that had the names and pics of the lead people in charge and the name of their orgs all the way down to our parent org. She's at the top. One of my coworkers decided to go around and point it out that she started out as a he and was being quite dickish about it. The next few weeks go by and I hear about her at least once a week and everyone is speculating and have no clue. Today it happened again. They were talking about Mrs Simpson again, and still hadn't figured out to do homework on it and were speculating. Six of my coworkers including my boss were outside my office doing it. I spammed the whole office with the following message:

Quote:
It seems there is confusion as to the nature of the person known as Amanda Simpson who is in our chain of command and basically the boss of our boss of our boss etc...

Here is her Wikipedia page:

Yes she has her own Wikipedia page.

If you doubt the veracity of what is on the internet, here are all the references sited on the Wikipedia page which you can follow up on at your leisure.

Also the use of a search engine may provide access to more info.

I've heard about her now at least once during the work week every week for the past five weeks.

First, come on peoples. Can't you do your own research instead of gossiping?
Second, I'm not out that I'm transsexual so this was imo was a risk for me.
Third, my boss just came and asked me to explain what transgender meant, and I hope I didn't f**k up with telling. I managed to not stutter or stumble through my words, but I'm not the best at verbal communication.

Fun stuff.

Good job posting that. That sort of gossip would make me uncomfortable, too. If they do find out, I hope they don't treat you differently or ostracize you.

I hope nothing bad happens to you as well. Since it appears one of your colleagues might not approve.

I'm not out, but I have boobs. I've lost a lot of weight so I'm getting skinnier and skinnier since I started, and my breasts are getting bigger and bigger. I'm a b-cup so far. They are very noticeable, and on some days, I have to wear a bra with some of my shirts and I know that the bra is easily seen through the shirt I wear.

No one has said a thing. I'm not ready to go full time so I haven't brought it up, but I know they are probably going WTF about me. But it's a gov job, and it's policy they can't discriminate against me for being Transgender.

The coworkers of course can be dicks about it.

So yeah. Life is fun.

The first step to ending ignorance is to confront it. The second step is to educate. Your boss didn't even know what transgender means. Maybe if someone honestly explained to him what being transgender means he might rethink those types of comments in the future.
