I have a brother in law that admitted to me that he is gay. He hasn't revealed this to any other family, as they are all very conservative Southern Baptists. I let him know I didn't care and loved him no matter what, thought he was an awesome guy (I really do have a lot of respect for him) and if he ever became involved in a long term relationship that I would very much like to meet his partner, even if under clandestine circumstances. In spite of his opening up to me, he still lives a very secretive life and doesn't really give any details, which is fine if that what makes him comfortable. My concern is that I might be missing some expectation he may have had and not providing the support he might have been looking for. I know he is really struggling but don't know how to help. Should I ask? I don't know how to further respond to this, but don't want to act as if all is ok if it really isn't. Thoughts anyone?

I might simply state that if he ever wants to talk or needs support to just let me know. I know I would have appreciated that from someone in my family.

I get the sense that being gay, or being autistis is hard to be around southern evangelical types. Is that at all true?

I am a Catholic so I do not really know..
