PCUSA Votes to Permit Same-Sex Marriages
It appears from unofficial voting tallies that amendment 14-F of the Directory for Worship in the Book of Order has been approved by a majority of the presbyteries. The approval allows Teaching Elders wider discretion in whose weddings they may conduct and Sessions wider discretion in whose weddings it may host. That discretion could include same gender marriages in states where that is permitted.
It is important to note that the determination of what couple a Teaching Elder will marry has and will continue to be with that Teaching Elder. Likewise, the determination by a Session as to whose weddings a congregation will host remains solely with the Session. There is nothing in the amendment to compel any Teaching Elder to conduct a wedding against his or her judgment, nor a Session to host one against its judgment.
...
What this essentially means is that (1) PCUSA will permit same-sex marriage ceremonies to be performed in PCUSA-affiliated churches, while (2) PCUSA-affiliated pastors and elders may still exercise personal 'discretion' (e.g., "Free Will") in deciding which couples they will join in marriage.
Several Presbyterian churches have already voted to break their affiliations with PCUSA over this decision - even churches in so-called 'Liberal' California!
Thoughts? Comments?
(Mind the rules, please.)
I think they realize that with the dwindling attendance of 'straight' people and the resulting decline in collection-plate revenue, opening the doors to a more sexually-diverse population means that the Presbyterian churches under PCUSA can continue to operate at a (non-) profit for many more years to come.

I would guess the motivations for this are a big ole mess of this and that. Yeah, profit is certainly going to be a motivating factor for some. Attendance in regards to spreading the word of whatever (v/s the money in the offering plate) is also most likely going to be a motivating factor for others. Keeping up with the times? Oh yeah. There are probably some out there who just see no reason why same sex marriage should be relevant at all now. Little of this, little of that.
Yeah, of course churches are going to break away from that. Why wouldn't they. I mean, in a way, some pretty serious core beliefs are being 'threatened' here. I do not know if that is the right word. Hm. It's just that people get real punchy sometimes when you start mixing god and gay. For many, it is one of those 'I am not bending on this' type of issues. Not saying I agree with that, I am not a Christian and I happen to be pansexual, so yeah, why would I have a problem with gay marriage?
I also have no problems with Christians who are fine with marrying gay people. I think it is great when they can get over outdated nonsense (I think it is) and see people as people and not just their sexual preferences. I know a pistol packin' priest who broke away from his what.. I forget the word... I''ll just say mother church... because he supports gay marriage and they would not bend on it. His church was not the only one that left during all that. I imagine it pissed off some of his congregation, but whatever. There are other churches out there. Schisms happen.
