England wanted to tax priests based on single vs married status, and in reaction the Church tried to prohibit gay priests, of which Anselm was one based on his well known letters to his bf. He won, by the way, although the Church would again prohibit gay priests before his death some number of years later. Interesting that it was originally over money, not catechism...
