The New Homophobia.
Even for a gynotropic cis-male like me, this account is disturbing.
. . .
There is a frightening new version of homophobia pervading the U.S., disguised as, of all things, "LGBTQ" activism. For adult gay people like me, it's clear that this activism does not advance our equality, but in fact compromises our ability to live peacefully in society. In fact, it is threatening our very existence.
I first became aware of this new homophobia in the summer of 2017, when I interned at a major LGBTQ-rights organization. That January, I had enrolled at Columbia University to complete my undergraduate degree, a goal I had been postponing for over a decade. After volunteering for Maryland's marriage equality campaign and a subsequent transgender rights legislation campaign, my aspiration was to become a social justice writer and activist.
My excitement about the internship quickly gave way to a nauseating mixture of fear and shame. I was, I quickly learned, not the right kind of "queer." I was just another "cis" (short for "cisgender," a word I had never even heard until it was assigned to me, typically as a slur) gay male -- in other words, a privileged and unevolved relic of the past. After all, I had my rights -- the right to marry, the right to serve openly in the military, the right to assimilate into this oppressive, "cisheteronormative," patriarchal society. It was time to make way for a new generation of "queer," one that had very little to do with sex-based rights and more to do with abolishing the concepts of sex and sexuality altogether.

Is this phenomenon he claims true in the West?
I am also thinking about this.
China's most famous transgender woman, the talk show host, has a habit of emphasizing gender stereotypes in a way that makes many people uneasy. For example, claiming that "a woman who has given birth to a child is a full woman"and the "feminine nature of suppleness".
Other Chinese MTF or FTM communities also tend to subdivide "masculine traits" and "feminine traits" to emphasize their own identity. And they sometimes try to draw individuals who do not conform to gender stereotypes into their communities.
Is it possible that this is not an isolated phenomenon?

When I read this account I am struck by the emphasis on providing medical support to people who are still children. Actually, society seems less willing to talk frankly about the sexuality of underage people than when I was younger OTOH giving a 12-year-old hormones to suppress the expression of sexual development, related that child's assigned gender at birth, that might otherwise occur naturally seems like it could have the effect of neutering a large part of the population, a possible symptom of the sex-negativity that seems to be spreading.
Perhaps the writer of that article should forget the Ivy League and train to be a mechanic or plumber. There are plenty of gay people in those trades. Being gay is not by itself a reason to become an activist any more than being hetero is.
Is it possible that this is not an isolated phenomenon?
Well, as for that part of it,

The Center for Gender Surgery at Boston Children's Hospital offers gender affirmation surgery services to eligible adolescents and young adults who are ready to take this step in their journey. It is the first center of its kind in the U.S. in a major pediatric hospital setting.
Our approach to gender surgery
As the first pediatric center in the country dedicated to the surgical care of transgender patients, we take an interdisciplinary approach from the start to ensure exceptional patient care. Our skilled team includes specialists in plastic surgery, urology, endocrinology, nursing, gender management, and social work, who collaborate to provide a full suite of surgical options for transgender teens and young adults. Our experienced anesthesia team works to provide culturally sensitive care to the gender-diverse community. By partnering with the hospital's nationally recognized Gender Management Service (GeMS), which provides a range of medical options for transgender youth, we help young people with gender identity concerns transfer seamlessly to surgical care if and when they are ready.
The Center currently offers vaginoplasty, metoidioplasty, phalloplasty, chest reconstruction, breast augmentation, facial harmonization and other gender affirmation surgeries to eligible patients. We follow the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) guidelines to surgically treat people who are stable in their gender identity and have documentation of persistent gender dysphoria. You do not need to be a GeMS patient to have surgery at the Center.
Our areas of innovation in gender surgery
The Center's setting in an academic medical center means that our clinicians are able to benefit from Boston Children's rich community of scientific and clinical resources. As the Center grows, we hope to further expand our understanding of gender concerns and surgical techniques by leading and participating in various research projects. Our areas of interest include access improvements to gender-affirming surgery, fertility intentions and concerns of transgender young adults, and educational interventions regarding post-surgical self-care.

I guess a question might be, when Boston Children's Hospital uses the term young adults in,
"
who collaborate to provide a full suite of surgical options for transgender teens and young adults.
"
Do they see the lower age limit of 'young adult' the same as universities and libraries and writers and publishers do
"

"
Young Adult literature is generally described as books written for an audience of 12-20 year olds
