I've got Broken (EP), Fixed (EP Remixes), The Downward Spiral, With Teeth, Year Zero, and Year Zero Remixed. I'd say Broken is probably the best of those. Year Zero took some time to grow on me, mostly because I think it's so different. I think Reznor's working with Saul Williams has really affected his sound as well, so it's definitely different. Far more lyrically interesting than the other albums, and a lot less openly angry. Bands develop - it happens, and I think NIN is really going through some change right now. Given Reznor's already said now he's out of contract, his next album will probably go up for free online, any worries about whether you'll like his newer material will probably be mitigated by the fact it'll be free.

You don't have The Fragile???

That's his greatest work! That's the Wall of the 1990s!

I respect few artists more than NIN. Reznor revolutionized Industrial and Rock alike.

But I don't love every NIN song...many of their songs I don't care for at all...but Reznor's a true visionary, and the songs I do like by NIN are songs that I love.

I don't like Pretty Hate Machine because of that old 80's synth sound it has, but it's by no means bad.
I generally like "The Downward Spiral" but again, that old synth sound makes it hard for me to listen to frequently. It's a testament to the power of its songs that I like it at all despite the old sound--"Hurt" especially.
I think that "The Fragile" has some brilliant songs and a lot of songs I always skip. XD But I love "Somewhat Damaged," "We're in This Together," "Starf**kers, Inc.," the title track, "The Wretched," etc. I have to agree that it's his best work...just a tad bloated.
"With Teeth" is more or less their sell out radio-friendly album, and I can't say I like it much but it has some good songs.
"Year Zero" I loathed at first, but it's really grown on me...at this point I basically love it.

It's hard to explain just how NIN works for me when I realize that I dislike most of their songs, how I can still call myself a fan of them overall.

That is a good comparison.

My Favorite band of all time. I started with "Everyday is Exactly the same" single and moved to "Closer" on The Downward Spiral. Then last year I started listening to more of The Downward Spiral album, as well as the With Teeth, Broken, and some of the PHM and the Fragile. I also like to listen to Year Zero.

Great band really.

I drifted away from NIN after TDS, but I saw their concert last spring on satellite and then went out and bought With Teeth. It fit my mental state at the time, as I'd just been diagnosed with AS a few months before and was going through some heavy "adjusting." Only, The Line Begins to Blur, Right Where it Belongs - they just fit. Yes, I agree that it's NIN-lite, but it did a great job of keeping me sane. He's an amazing guy.

Okay so far here is what rocked me:

March Pigs
Piggy
Ringfinger
Pretty Piece of Flesh!! **
Purest
Santified **
Sin Day The World
Burn
Capital G (okay)
Dead Souls (creepy!)
Deep
Fight Club
Hurt * not cash version.
Into the Void

Agreed as said Reznor is a one-trick-pony, but this template can be applied to many groups and bands. Sometimes if it is not broke don't fix is a decent rule of thumb, of course until that runs out of gas or you convert a new fanbase.

Perhaps I was premature to toss around the genius label but certainly Reznor caught my attn like no band has in years and the day I picked to gird up my loins and toss on the headgear was a bullseye for these above posted songs, I was anxious, angry, pissed, confused and adrenaline wound. As I went for my noon walk I felt like James Woods in Carpenter's Vampires or like Blade walking into a battle in Blade I or Blade II or I felt like Conan striding forth to battle with a broad sword or I felt like a Fireman walking into an inferno to save a little kid and his miniture poodle or I felt like.......well you get the idea. grins!

Some of his songs just sounded like radio static with overlays of voices, some are very cool, like I said it is like Pink Floyon steroids, perhaps I will tire soon of them, but I still have to try the 2nd edition of songs I have in no particular order. Right now I am eyeballing a nifty 2 gig MP3 player. Woot!

** Funny thing as I posted before NIN really grabbed me by the shorthairs, because I audiobook it everyday, so to lay down my Dark Tower #7 novel for a new band - this is really a unprecedented event for old Frosty.

Cheers!

Nope. It's on my list of CDs to purchase, but.. it's a big list. And I can't afford to buy any more music 'til after Christmas.

I think you'll like Ministry, specially The Mind is a terrible thing to taste, and the Psalm69 one (the one with the angel in the cd cover). They are from the same era.

have you head the Fixed album? rules. Also Further down the spiral.

I really like NIN music but the lyrics are angry/depressing to the point of being cheesy like black metal lyrics. The Frigile kicks ass though. Especially the instrumental songs.
