I've been fooling myself with attempts at classical composition lately. My favorites are of the orchestral variety classics, love the big sound. Yet my own playing in the style tends towards the baroque, which I don't like to listen to, odd. But I'd rather listen to the highlights than the whole thing, more often than not; I respect the idea of thematic development, but find myself bored if things start to drag too much. Sibelius, Rachmaninoff, some Wagner and Beethoven, things of that nature. More into other genres that incorporate classical stylings like progressive rock, or "Rhapsody in Blue," or something like Stan Getz's FOCUS. King Crimson's ISLANDS is underrated, I think.
I'm more interested in the debate between "high art" and "low art," and have many rows about the value of Yes with the purely classical crowd as well as rockers. Either they're not good enough for the classical crowd, or too good for the punk/pop people. Fascinating. I fall somewhere else, I believe the classical symphonies were great achievements, but it's wrong to assume that other forms of music can't inspire or move just as much, even if they aren't as developed thematically or technically.
