Good qualifier with needing to know all the bands. I would have said Yes, but I don't know Van Der Graaf Generator.

I would agree with Willard, and also add Neu and Faust to the list.

I would definitely vote for Neu.

How can you possibly start a thread on prog rock without including Rush? Rush are a great band, especially their eighties work.

Yes are my favourite, but have to agree a lot important bands left out here; how about Jethro Tull?

Oh, and Rush are Prog of course; tons of lengthy instrumentals, dorky lyrics about black holes and the like, unusual time sigs, stop / start, loud / soft etc, and single handedly responsible for a whole new genre: Prog metal.

Man. I cannot even choose right now. No. I cannot choose ever. Perhaps the five greatest bands of all time!

I saw four of the five live way back in the seventies. All except VDGG. Pawn Hearts is one of my favorite albums of all time!

well, there's certainly more than these. Kansas (not the hits of course), Starcastle, Triumvirat, UK, Porcupine something (just found out about them), and a host of other forgotten groups.

Most of the modern prog rock to my ears is basically all over the place; lead synth solos (arpeggios?..., occasional accidental harmony, etc... But I'd love to find out more about them, I live with Country fans and it's driving me crazy...

Out of the bands listed, I'd have to say that it's a tie between Peter Gabriel era Genesis and King Crimson. Out of bands not listed, I would also suggest Neu! , Can, and Faust as well. For those of you who are not informed, Germans took the Prog Rock Genre and took it in a differant direction. --Look up the term 'Krautrock'.

Other people have mentioned the lack of Rush, ELP (the best prog rock band), Tull, etc...but a few more suggestions:

Alan Parsons Project
Moody Blues
ELO (they've got the sound, if not the seriousness down, and I'm not talking about their hits).

Yeah! Jethro Tull! I listened to Thick as a Brick yesterday. That album is a masterpiece!

I am fond of King Crimson and latter-day bands in that vein, such as Anekdoten. I consider Rush to be hard rock.

I like mostly new prog bands like Porcupine tree, Anekdoten, Black Bonzo, Riverside.

One 70's band i like is Camel.

What i don't like about some 70's bands is the singing, i can't stand that really english voice.
