Not a metal fan per definition but I enjoy some bands. Some old school bands such as Ozzy-fronted Black Sabbath are just brilliant in their creativity, especially Sabbath who really defined the metal genre for the first time and without whom we may have never seen other pioneers such as Judas Priest or (highly overrated) Iron Maiden.

In more recent times, Marilyn Manson and to lesser extend Rammstein had some great tracks, and some of the symphonic metal bands have good songs although there are too many of those around and you need to dig to filter the quality from the mediocre ones.

My favourite metal band is Orphaned Land, from Israel. They mix metal with Arabic and Jewish folk music, so apart from typical metal sounds and instruments you will also hear traditional instruments from the Middle East. This all forms a sound which is unique, unique not just in metal but also in music generally. It crosses the boundaries of a genre in an extreme way and is multicultural like music rarely has been before. Lyrically the band is very intense and interesting, with a lot of religious metaphores, but most of all they are to me the perfect merger between western rock/hardrock and oriental traditional music. Mabool is one of the best metal albums ever, maybe even one of the best albums generally. Orphaned Land have a unique concept but it just works out so damn well.

I like Middle Eastern metal in general quite a lot, mainly Orphaned Land but also Salem and Mezarkabul for example both have some great material that reflects both their Middle Eastern roots and their love for heavy metal.

Ripped? From the meshnet or locally?

Bittorrent, it's completely leaked.. you can download it so quickly.

It was done i 3 minutes for me. Never thought they would release another good album but they done it! Its actually better than megadeths last album, which is something metallica haven't been able to do in a long time. Gets an official 5 horns up from me

I'm not really that knowledgable about metal bands, but I do like a few. I love Dream Theater, Riverside, Opeth, Tool, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Black Sabbath. I also like Metallica, too.

Yeah, I dabble into some metal on occasion.

Opeth, Meshuggah, Protest the Hero, Nile, Katatonia, Tool(Suppose this could go under Metal), Cryptopsy, Kataklysm, Mastodon, Sepultura, At the Gates, Slayer, etc.

Tool is difficult to categorise, but Id say metal is definitely amongst the tags you could use. I love them as well, but in my opinion A Perfect Circle is on an even higher level. I wish Maynard would take some more time off to focus on APC again instead of that Puscifer thing which is clearly just a joke.

As much as I hate to sound like one of those conceited 'kvlt' metal fans, I like true metal - not most the stuff previously mentioned that is closer to alternative rock. I listen to bands from many subgenres of metal, like black metal, death metal, doom/stoner, grindcore. My favourite metal bands are probably Napalm Death, Bathory, Mayhem, Carcass, Emperor, Vader, Morbid Angel, Pig Destroyer, Electric Wizard and Black Sabbath.

I hate whining about labels so forgive me for asking this, but in what way would the bands mentioned above be less metal than for example Black Sabbath? What criteria separates metal from hardrock or alternative rock? A band like Tool for example tends to sound a lot heavier and darker than most early metal bands such as Sabbath or Maiden.

^ I am not saying that Tool aren't metal. I'm saying the bands the original poster and a couple of others mentioned are not metal. I can not explain it but there is a difference betwen metal and rock. They are related but the bands have different sounds.

Hell yeah! I love mostly speed-thrash metal. I like bands like testament, anthrax, megadeth, metallica(old), slayer, pantera, exodus, venom, and others. I don't feel that metal these days has the same power behind it as it used to. Bands like limp biskit, lincoln park, POD, and trivium don't have the same raw, brutal ebergy that metal used to have IMO. However, in recent years hardcore has become popular and bands like dillinger escape and norma jean are VERY heavy and brutal.

Blind Guardian, Elvenking, Battlelore, Iced Earth, Grave Digger, Moonsorrow, Finntroll, Ensiferum, Dimmu Borgir...I like the really good stuff. A lot of the previously mentioned bands like Linkin Park I don't consider metal.
