I'm about as far from a country music fan as you can get, but Tim McGraw's "Don't Take the Girl" never fails to tear me up.

Elliott Smith wrote many genuinely sad songs. I wouldn't call them ridiculously sad, as that would be saying the pain, loneliness and sadness Elliott felt and drew from to write his songs was ridiculous. I think only a soulless as*hole would suggest that (and regrettably, there are soulless as*holes who have).

Here's one I think a lot of Aspies can relate to - "Tomorrow, Tomorrow" (I hate this fan vid, but the live versions on YouTube had awful sound quality):

Everybody knows which way you go, straight to over
No one wants to see you inside of me, straight to over
I heard the hammer at the lock
Say you're deaf and dumb and done
Give yourself another talk
This time make it sound like someone

The noise is coming out, and if it's not out now
Then tomorrow, tomorrow
They took your life apart and called you failure's art
They were wrong though, they won't know
'Til tomorrow

I got static in my head
The reflected sound of everything
Tried to go to where it led
But it didn't lead to anything

The noise is coming out, and if it's not out now
I know it's just about to drown tomorrow out

This is the song i start every day with ... JK..
But sometimes though...when life seems to painful to bear it helps to feel that one is not alone either in the misery of joys of life.

Dreams Made Flesh by Dead Can Dance.. the only discernible lyrics are "That's what I miss". But it's beautiful and painfully heart-wrenching to me..

I was using ridiculous more in a slang sense, as in extreme. I didn’t mean to imply that the sadness isn’t genuine. Most of the songs that have been posted in this thread are extremely genuine IMHO.

Then again if I was a musician I probably would write sad music for its own sake, not necessarily drawn from real life experiences. I don’t have to feel depressed to enjoy the beauty of melancholy music. I actually enjoy it even more when I’m in good spirits. People who knock music down for being “too depressing” suck. Melancholy does not equate to depressing for everyone.

Since the Cash cover of "Hurt" has already been mentioned:

[i]He had white horses
And ladies by the score
All dressed in satin
And waiting by the door

Oooh, what a lucky man he was
Oooh, what a lucky man he was

White lace and feathers
They made up his bed
A gold-covered mattress
On which he was led

Oooh, what a lucky man he was
Oooh, what a lucky man he was

He went to fight wars
For his country and his king
Of his honor and his glory
The people would sing

Oooh, what a lucky man he was
Oooh, what a lucky man he was

A bullet had found him
His blood ran as he cried
No money could save him
So he laid down and he died

Oooh, what a lucky man he was
Oooh, what a lucky man he was

The song at the End of 'Once Upon a Forest' .. It's so incredibly hard to find the song out there on the web.. And to post the link would be to put up a whole section of the movie.

It's Called 'Once Upon a Time With Me' If anyone wants to search it.

Forgotten by Avril Lavigne

Oh, oh
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
Oh, oh

I'm giving up, on everything
Because you messed me up
Don't know how much you screwed it up
You never listen, that's just to bad

Because I'm moving on,
I won't forget you were the one that was wrong
I know I need to step up and be strong
Don't patronize me, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah

Have you forgotten
Everything that I wanted
Did you forget it, no you never got it
Do you get it now, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah
yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah

Oh, oh
Oh, oh

Gotta get away,
There's no point in thinking about yesterday
It's too late now, it won't ever be the same
We're so different now, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah

Have you forgotten
Everything that I wanted
Did you forget it, no you never got it
Do you get it now, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah
yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah

I know I wanna runaway, I know I wanna runaway
Runaway
If only I could runaway, if only I could runaway
Runaway
I told you what I wanted, I told you what I wanted
What I wanted
But I was forgotten, I won't be forgotten
Never again

Have you forgotten
Everything that I wanted
Did you forget it, no you never got it
Do you get it now,
Do you get it now,

Have you forgotten
Everything that I wanted
Did you forget it, no you never got it
Do you get it now

Have you forgotten, do you get it now

It just clicks with a lot of what I feel about my father's abandonment.

In my rear-view mirror
The sun is going down
Sinking behind bridges in the road
And I think of all the good things
That we have left undone
And I suffer premonitions
Confirm suspicions
Of the holocaust to come

The rusty wire that holds the cork
That keeps the anger in
Gives way and suddenly
It's day again
The sun is in the east
Even though the day is done
Two suns in the sunset -
Hmmm -
Looks like the human race is run

Like the moment when the brakes lock
And you slide toward the big truck
You stretch the frozen moments with your fear
And you'll never hear their voices (Daddy! Daddy!)
And you'll never see their faces
You have no recourse to the law anymore

And as the windshield melts
And my tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend
Finally I understand the feelings of the few
Ashes and diamonds
Foe and friend
We were all equal in the end...

- Pink Floyd, "Two Suns In the Sunset", The Final Cut

I remember seeing Pinocchio in the movies when I was very young, 5, and identifying with the puppet. At that age I realized that I was very different than most people. When I heard the song "When You Wish Upon A Star" I recall thinking that I wished it was that simple to get my wish of not being so different. Sometimes, not often, I still feel the same way. But every time I hear the song I cry. It actually reminds me of Pavlov's dog.
