This video is from their last album, Fear of a Blank Planet. It happened to be released the very same day of the Virginia Tech shooting.

Favourite band ever. The Fear Of A Blank Planet video is alright, but I much prefer the Harmony Korine one.

Wow, good call, I'll have to buy this. The philosophy of the mood and lyrics is pretty well concreted as well - as in its real, its honest, its angst over a reality where (like in the first video) kids are almost horrified that their parents brought them into this ambiguous pointless dead end of an existence, which is the phase our society seems to be rather well rested in for the moment - in that sense its incredibly on-point and accurate. I can see where certain dynamics seem to come and go, this feels a lot like something that would have come out just as easily between 1992 and 94, has a lot of Faith No More, Tool, Soundgarden type influences. Sadly it seems like depth in music seems to come and go as just as much of a fad, probably plenty of guys came along with as much insight in the late 90's or early 2000's era but no one wanted it - it was all about nerd rock, Weezer, not the deep stuff; seems like Muse had a lot to do with reopening the market place for deeper vibes and thankfully so (my favorite genre had an eerie parallel also - extremely good in 1997/98, fell off big time around 2001, started recovering in 2005, and is almost as good again now as it was back in 1997/98 ).

I've gotta hand it to you, not too many people expose me to things that I find myself liking, wish it happened more often. Thanks for the info!

Porcupine Tree has actually been around since the early 90s. Well, it was created in the late 80s as a joke. He wanted to create a fake band that supposedly existed in the 70s. Well, the music got great reviews, so he made a real band out of it. Of course, the way they sound today is nothing like it was originally. In fact, no one PT album sounds the same.

"My fear is that the current generation of kids who're being born into this information revolution, growing up with the Internet, cell phones, iPods, this download culture, 'American Idol,' reality TV, prescription drugs, PlayStations — all of these things kind of distract people from what's important about life, which is to develop a sense of curiosity about what's out there." -Steven Wilson

I remember a band called Porcupine Tree of whom I bought several singles and they had a few hits in my chart around 10 years ago, the first of which was Piano Lessons.

Those seem like tools for hiding as well, from a reality that even if you exist on the outside of it that seems to be somersaulting into oblivion. Its part of that whole confusion of living in a day and age where the culture is quasi-religious, quasi-atheistic, no one has any answers on how to plot a course forward, and the systems that we've built to manage the complexities of our reality have taken on logic all their own to where they stop serving their purpose so much as serving their own existence. So, there's a lot of angst, anxiety, and nihilism to be had by all.
