Wow I love this song but my preferred version is by Jeff Buckley

I also love "Unloved" by Jann Arden

Amen to that. I absolutely love Jeff Buckley, one of my favorite singers.
"Lover You Should've Come Over" is probably my favorite song by him
some other songs I like would be:
Constant Knot, or Like Knives by City And Colour
Song To The Siren, or Once I Was by Tim Buckley (Jeffs dad)
Joga Covered by Ben Gibbard and Ben Barnett
His Hands Matched His Tongue by The Dear Hunter
Kissing You by Des'ree (from the Romeo & Juliette sdtk)

I could go on for days lol

The first song is Tristan, and while I do like that song, the second half of the video, Sanvean, is mind-blowing and filled with lament. Lisa Gerrard is beyond words. The climax of Sanvean (4:21) made me feel like someone else could understand the way I feel.

If you've never heard the album Towards the Within or at least haven't watched DCD play it, I highly reccommend viewing this video:

Being seriously alexithymic, I need music to connect to and regulate emotions.

Several songs, which other posters have mentioned, help me connect to more frequently occurring sadness or emptiness.
1. The Boxer - Simon & Garfunkel
2. My Immortal - Evanescence
3. Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks

For deeper sadness, emptiness or "češnja" (a feeling of longing) I usually turn to:
4. At Seventeen - Janis Ian
5. Reflections of My Life - The Marmalade
6. Theme from Mahogany - Diana Ross
7. My Eyes Adored You - Frankie Valli

And, in the darkest hours, the go-to song to help me back away from the edge:
8. Vincent - Don McLean

While not all of these songs are necessarily sad or melancholy, they are strongly assocatied with these all-too-common feelings for me, and receive a great deal of iPod airtime.

Nirvana - Something In The Way.

I can never decide which version is bleaker:

Opeth - Face of Melinda
Amanda Palmer - Another Year
Porcupine Tree - Prodigal
Dave Matthews Band - The Dreaming Tree

Yeah, I know, it seems like a random selection the way it looks on paper. But these are my favorite melancholy songs.
