No real favorite, but I like the pop-ish, jazz-ish acoustic type of indie (the type one would hear at a coffee house).

I like way too much music to even begin with an encompassing list.

For music in 2009, I like: Animal Collective, Bat For Lashes, Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Phoenix, Neon Indian, Memory Tapes, Dirty Projectors, Twelves, Classixx, Fever Ray, Japandroids, Metric, Passion Pit, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, St Vincent, The XX... just to name a few.

From the past decade, I've liked: Interpol, Wilco, Arcade Fire, The Walkmen, Santogold, M83, Lily Allen, Ladyhawke, The Knife, Fleet Foxes, Cut Copy.

Some of my all-time favorites: The Beatles, Talking Heads, The Smiths, The Pixies, Sonic Youth, Sunny Day Real Estate.

I know I'm forgetting some real gems... oh well.

wow lots of good bands mentioned in this thread.

I used to be very into indie music a few years ago and knew all the good new bands before they even released a single. Since moving away from stockholm (everyone seems to be obsessed with indie music in that town) i pretty much lost touch with the scene. Now I go home and take a look at my younger brothers mp3-player, realise I don't know who half of the artists are and start feeling very old...

Some of my favourite indie bands are (one or two might be more synthpop..)

The Shins
Vampire Weekend
The Smiths
Suburban Kids With Biblical Names
Tough Alliance
Radio Dept
Orange Juice
Wedding Present
Magnetic Fields
The Pixies
bob hund
Aislers Set
Ballboy
Lucksmiths
My Favourite
Laura Watling

+all other twee pop, bitpop, early punk, synthpop

I used to be mad into this stuff, but I've gotten less of an interest lately, getting more into hardcore slowly.

If I had to pick one at the moment though, it'd be Modest Mouse.

Brilliant musicianship, great lyrics, consistent albums that have no filler despite having like 16 songs average. love this band.

They don't all have to be DIY indie but post mainstream and record studio bands are okay.

I really dig...

Bat For Lashes, Metric, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Shins, Stereolab, M83, Melody's Echo Chamber out of that label... there's a lot more that I have to check out. Some of them I didn't like so much...

My favorite band of all time is Ladytron. They mostly make electronica with new-wave and dreampop elements (esp. on their last albums). They could probably be classified as one of my Asperger's "special interests" tbh. 8)
