:D This was a symptom of Aspergers. And she was right! I love the music of the Indian Snake Charmers. In fact, when I was five, and I first heard this flute hypnotizing the cobra; I went into a trance. I then became the snake charmer! I'm curious why this is a common sympton among people with Aspergers? I also like Ambient, Progressive Rock, and Synthesizers. I also like the older and experimental Jazz. Thanks for any help with my question. :)

That's interesting. I like to explore anything outside of my cultural norm.

Welcome to the club.

BTW, Here's the incredibly strange music. Enjoy. :D

I think we like anything that falls outside the usual musical structures in pop culture, because it's different. Not to say that you don't like ANY pop music, but it does get quite repetitive.

Tha fact that you responded to the said snake charmer music so strongly when you were only five is significant.

You were too young to strive to be cool, and were niether tyring to fit in, nor trying to rebel against others by claiming allegaince to strange music..

For some reason you got charmed by snake charmer music. So -maybe you're a snake!
Actually- maybe it is something neurolical.

I did not know it was a symptom. The diagnostic criteria do not mention anything about music, as far as I know.
However, I have heard reports about children with autism and AS becoming fascinated, almost hypotized, by watching spinning things (eg, washing machines), so perhaps it follows that people with autism and AS are more likely than NTs to like hypnotic music.

I really like ambient music myself, stuff like Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, Vangelis.
I quite like the hypotic drone of the snake charmer sound, but I don't think I'd go out and buy a CD of snake charmer music.

Did you see the snake charmer for real, or on TV, or just listen to them on a recording?

I like Indian classical and folk music (and not filmi or bungra)

Most people who have seen snake charmers haven't heard the Indian flute (bansuri), but another wind instrument altogether called pungi or been sounds like this:

bansuri sounds like this

The guy playing there happens to be my favourite flautist of all time (sorry herbie mann). I saw him play with Ravi Shankar at the Barbican Centre as part of the Farwell to Europe tour. It would be pretty difficult to upstage Ravi, but he played stunningly as ever.

I'm into all sorts, but certainly jazz/fusion has a lot in common with Indian classical.

Well, the music you listed (which i love as well :D ) can be possibly decribed (although of course not always) as 'complicated' or 'cerebal' (maybe even 'introverted') music that takes some effort to understand, i guess.

What i'm saying is that jazz and progressive rock are full of complicated harmony and unconventional rhythm and so on, and i know that these elements are part of what makes me like the music.

On the other hand i guess imagination could also be an answer, after all these types of music certainly feel more like a musical 'journey' to me. Not to sound pretentious, but compared to conventional pop music, jazz and progressive rock as well as some electronic music has a lot more imagination and emotion (for lack of a better word). As opposed to being music just for dancing or something.

As long as you like music, it's still normal anyway.

I think the same could be applied to other things besides music. The point being curiosity for it's own sake. I don't think that's necessarily an AS trait ;but think of where we'd be if the world was entirely populated with incurious people.

I checked out snake charmer music on YouTube and didn't really like the few examples I heard, but this I could listen to for hours.

Yeah, i would say that it's not necessarily a AS trait as well. I guess there's always a balance to things.

I tend to like music that has dark/brooding or edgy emotional quality to it. Most conventional pop music doesn't do anything for me. I'm not sure why but I've been this way for as long as I can remember.
