S'more bands:

The Knife - Swedish electro-pop duo

Fever Ray
- One half of said duo (solo project)

Caravan - Fantastic Canterbury rock band

Steven Wilson projects:
Bass Communion - Amazing drone music, very texture-focused
Blackfield - Israel-based melancholy pop rock
Insurgentes - Steven Wilson's solo album. My favourite album of all time, not even exaggerating

Papercuts - Dreamy psychedelic rock, in a similar vein to Jefferson Airplane

Neon Indian - Nostalgia inducing psychedelic electro

It's difficult to tell how well known or well-appreciated a band is nowadays, a few of these guys are very high on Pitchfork lists and such.

I don't know that Rainbow are that obscure, unless you're talking Doogie White era Rainbow and if you like that have you checked out Cornerstone?

Yey, I'm so glad Spoks Beard and Procupine Tree have had mentions.

Camel are awesome. Took me a couple of years to track down a copy of the first album on vinyl, but it was worth it.

Drive like Jehu is a fab name for a band, must check that out.

Others I would like to add:

Deathcab for Cutie
The Bathers
The Rembrandts
The Waves (before they were called Katrina and the Waves they were punky)
The Blue Nile
Ray Wilson (Lead singer of Stiltskin)
Jeff Scott Soto
The Dream Academy
Lone Justice (Maria McKee's group)
The River Detectives
Maximo Park

5ive's Continuum Research Project
Absolute Zero
Gabby La La
Ground Zero
Jandek - I think he's got a larger following these days, but I'll mention him anyway because he's one of my absolute favourites, and deserves way more praise than he gets.
Rosetta
Snakefinger - people are probably aware of him from his work with The Residents, but his solo work is worthy of attention, too.
Supersilent
Tiny Tim - another one of my absolute favourites, who is unfortunately remembered mostly as just a minor novelty act from the 60's.
William Shatner - most people are aware of him, but not so many know of his album Has Been, which is one of the best of the last decade.
Won James Won
Yoko Ono - way underrated, if not so obscure.

Song is great. That song is the only thing whatsoever I know of Royksopp but I've been listening to that regularly since like 2005.

I've been listening to Lifter Puller a lot lately, not all that obscure but definitely underrated. Reminds me kinda of the two middle Jawbreaker albums (Bivouac & 24 Hour Revenge Therapy). I don't think I can say Lifter Puller's as good as their better-known offshoot (The Hold Steady), but wilder and more "interesting" for sure.

Opeth.

They are s**t nowadays, though, which is sad.

By the turnstile beckons a damsel fair
The face of Melinda neath blackened hair
No joy would flicker in her eyes
Brooding sadness came to a rise

Words would falter to atone
Failure had passed the stepping stone
She sworn her vows to another
This is when no-one will bother

And conceded pain in crumbling mirth
A harlot of God upon the earth
Found where she sacrificed her ways
That hollow love in her face

Still I plotted to have her back
The contentment that would fill the crack
My soul released a fluttering sigh
This day fell, the darkness nigh

I took her by the hand to say
All faith forever has been washed away
I returned for you in great dismay
Come with me, far away to stay

Endlessly gazing in nocturnal prime
She spoke of her vices and broke the rhyme
But baffled herself with the final line
"My promise is made but my heart is thine"
