I really like Ska punk and Celtic punk; my favorite bands in these genres are Streetlight Manifesto and Dropkick Murphys, respectively. I also like 90's and 80's punk like the Replacements, the Offspring and Dead Kennedys.

The stuff I hate with a passion include the Pop Punk my brother listens to 24/7. An example includes Four Year Strong, which has no rhythm and is covered in distorted PM notes. They also create more covers than actual originals, and their cover of my favorite song ever was so bad that they basically killed the song.

Cha fìor toil leam an t-aimn "Celtic Punk" air sgàth 's nach eil a' gharbh-chuid de còmhlanan a cuir an t-aimn "Celtic Punk" orra fhìn cànan Cèilteach a bhruidhinn no nach eil iad a sheinn anns cànan Cèilteach. 'S e dìreach baoth-chliuch a th' ann a cuir an t-aimn "Celt" ort gun cànan Cèilteach agad.

I respect Celtic punk bands like Mill a h-Uile Rud, because they actually sing in a Celtic language and work to help promote that language. But those other bands that want to call themselves Celtic and can't be bothered to help keep Celtic languages alive, well--just going along with the status quo of English doesn't seem either very punk or very Celtic to me.

I'm definitely an undercover punk fan myself. As a 46 year old woman I would feel pretty silly in a mohawk. I used to call myself a "secret punk." :)

Me too. I save the Fugazi for when the kids aren't around.

I saw the Ramones way back in the day in a show with the Misfits. Good times. Now I'm feeling kinda old. My kid wants a mohawk, but I think it's because he thinks he'll look like a dinosaur. :)

hahahaha!! ! ..that just made my day. :D

Back in '81 I was a young punk but i got sick of not being able to get in anywhere [banned from the pubs 'cause they don't like punks...] so i mutated into a rudeboy skinhead [anti facist] the thing was my music tastes were consistent throughout and my politics only beacme more refined with maturity.
For me 'punk' was always about a 'do it yourself' attitude more than any style and was in fact anti fashion/anti style. However I am of a certain time and place and this need not be what punk means to anyone else.
Bands I still listen to from those days? well most of it's too angry for me now and I listen mainly to Ska, Rocksteady and Skinhead Reggae but The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers [the first four LP's], The Buzzcocks, The Mekons, The Partisans, maybe some anti facist/red wedge Oi...
When 'Rave' culture was born I thought it was the new punk for the very reason that it was a do it yourself counterculture, that didn't last long though and now it seems all 'youth' culture is inherently consumable and mainstream, the counterculture as product rather than experience or expression.
New music wise it seems sound wise there is plenty of 'Punk' that I think totally misses the point and there is loads of stuff that gets it while not sounding particularly 'punk' I think that of what I've heard the Arctic Monkeys first album is a brilliant 'punk' record and The real Mckenzies get the raucus liberated rebellion thing pretty well.
Lots of bands that are off style fly the banner though, I really like the first four Levellers albums and We free Kings album 'hell on earth and rosy cross' is exceptional.
Blah blah, yeah my hands up, I'm anti capitalist/consummerist, dumpster dive, recycle etc so I feel pretty punk still,
peace j

I do. But I've been accused of being a phony because MOST of the bands I like are pop-rock or pop-punk. I got insulted a LOT on other messageboards because of it.

Here's a very "punk" retort for pretentious douchebags like that: f**k YOU!

I thought it up myself, but you can use it if you like...

Some people think if the band isn't obscure, it isn't punk.

The founding bands of the genre wanted to be successful.

Watch a few documentaries on the Ramones.

They wanted to be pop. The Ramones wanted to be the Offspring. The world just wasn't ready for them.

Punk isn't about suffering for your art, it's about unvarnished, do it yourself rock and roll!

If you can express yourself and sell 10 records, great!

If you can sell a million, even better!
