how do you break the glass and what shutter speed do you use?

I used a BB gun to break the glasses, I don't remember what the shutter speed was, I think it was somewhere around 3-5 seconds. I was shooting in the dark and using the flash the stop the movement of the water.

Scribbled out on scrap paper with Bic pen and highlighter during lunch break. Source is from AP photograph. I was simply attracted to the way the belts of bullets draped over the machine gun and was overcome by the compulsion to reproduce it. The repetition was mesmerizing.
