Personally, whilst I do, indeed, love the darker shades of music, and a fair share of black metal, I don't feel much with DSBM. To me, I can't help but see the name of the genre as merely a moniker or a marketing ploy, which, given the inherently "underground" nature of black metal, is repulsive to me.

The term "Depressive Suicidal Black Metal" was adopted by fans of the bands that fit the subgenre, not by the bands themselves. Due to this I don't see how it can be considered a marketing ploy.

That sounds plausible. The problem is that you left off at the point where a band might accept itself by this...fan-created name...and try to propagate it. Really how does it not sound absurd to you?

Let's take that last track as example. While I am not well-versed enough to tell you which chord progressions are being used and why it sounds as it does (though if you seek me out in a few years, I might be able to), I can say that this Make a Change...Kill Yourself track very much sounds like a sped up, blackened version of modern doom (think 2000's)...with blast beats or however the drumming is called. To call it depressive AND suicidal black metal with proper caps is a bit much. It's...well, magnanimous, to me, at least.

As to Burzum (the band/person), I'd rather say as little as possible, largely due to the fact that I cannot separate his person from his music and I very much despise the former. It, however, doesn't seem to me that Varg would ever willingly call or agree to fans calling his work DSBM. Again, it's a bit much.

Holy crap, I cannot believe that there are actually people here that like this stuff too! I have never seen this anywhere that I have been. I think I am in love.

DSBM has suicidal in its name but I love it even though I definitely have no desire to kill myself. It may sound odd but DSBM has some of the most beautiful music of any genre out there. Wedard is by far the best depressive black metal band.

I also love Burzum. I couldn't care less what the man believes or what he is saying. I can't understand him anyway! Some of my favorite black metal bands are national socialist, but only for the music. I just wouldn't mention this to most people.

The thing is, I can't help loving the man, despite his abhorrent political views. He's just so bloody charming.

Yeah, I’ve been pretty surprised by how many people here like underground-ish metal as well.
I think a big problem with the DSBM label is that some people seem to think it is a certain sound within the bm genre while others think it just means bm bands who have themes of depression and suicide regardless of their style. So you have an artist such as Burzum who helped pioneer the sound whose main focus isn’t on depression and suicide, then artists like Forgotten Tomb and Loss who I’ve also heard being labeled as dsbm.

I gained a little more respect for Varg now that he seems to have matured a bit over the years and dropped the modern National Socialist ideology in favour of ‘Odalism’ and the native Scandinavian democracy.

There’s a problem with the NSBM label as well as many bands who don’t promote National Socialism, some who aren’t even NS outside of their music and lyrics, are labeled as this. I think this is largely due to a few things. One being that even touching on nationalism and ancient cultural pride is scary and “taboo” in today’s society, thus these bands are “Nazis”. This is helped along by censorship/watchdog groups who do everything they can to slander. And lastly, it’s just an easy umbrella term that’s caught on.
Varg’s music itself has absolutely nothing to do with racism, NS etc etc.

I enjoy the music of many bands who often get the “NSBM” label, some who really do promote NS in their themes and others who are just commonly categorized as this – Graveland, Nokturnal Mortum, Der Sturmer, Capricornus, Thor’s Hammer, Fullmoon, Goatmoon, Satanic Warmaster, Spear of Longinus, Absurd, Ohtar, Dark Fury etc.
I don't have a problem mentioning it to people, though it can promote a negative response.

Their musical style changes somewhat noticeably with each album. They've also become slightly more popular than Tabasco in the urethra. For some reason, this is seen as selling out and becoming mainstream.

I think Satanic Warmaster and Goatmoon earned it. Not saying it's a bad thing, though, I love them both.

I like them on occasion, there are better bands but they are not too bad in my opinion.

Yeah, though with these bands it isn’t as prominent of a theme as it with Der Sturmer and Aryan Terrorism and the like.
SW have also got relatively big so naturally it’s came back to bite them in the ass (e.g French Hellfest)..

@thewrll's post:
I don't hate Cradle of Filth but I'm certainly not going to go out of my way to listen to them or anything.
To me the older, somewhat more black metal oriented albums (Principle of Evil Made Flesh, V empire) are sort of mediocre for what they are and what I’ve heard of newer stuff is way too polished, overproduced and theatrical (sometimes downright cheesy) to be of much of any interest to me.
I have never been a big fan of ‘symphonic’, ‘operatic’ or ‘gothic’ types of metal save very few bands. Dani Filth’s vocals also get on my nerves.

I listen to a lot of this genre, I usually find it strangely uplifting in a way.

I've liked Make A Change... Kill Yourself for a while but I can never find an album of theirs, anywhere.

I like the ambient, more melodic quality to the music. It's a nice change from bands trying to be heavier than heavy and more brutal than brutal.

Their first 3 albums are stone-cold classics, ever since Midian they have slowly gone downhill. Although Godspeed was a good album, they aren't seen as a black metal band. They had elements of black metal on their rough demos and Principle of Evil Made Flesh before they evolved on Dusk and Her Embrace.
