The book by Lois Lowry? Although some of it is unrealistic, it's quite an interesting story.

Ah yes, I read that book years ago in high school. Interesting read. For some reason I was the only person in my class who seemed to not hate it :? I guess the content was lost on those simpletons

One of my top ten favorite books of all time.

I read The Giver as a novel study in Grade 8. It was a very interesting book with a very unique plot. The flaw it seemed to have was the ending, because it was too unclear what actually ended up happening. Apparently, there are 2 sequels to the book, which I've never read.

I don't remember the ending, but I vaguely remember feeling the same way. Had no idea there were sequels

I remember that book upset me. Gabriel was delayed and they were going to release him and I was upset about how everyone had to be perfect or they get released if they had something wrong with them so that meant people with disabilities got released.

I love that book. And I think the ending was supposed to be vague so you could decide what happened to them yourself. I always thought it implied that they got away safely. The next two books are not really sequels, but they can tie up some loose ends. Like the one says that they met a boy with blue eyes, that you could assume would be Jonas, and the last one says something about Gabe, but I don't remember what exactly.

I also heard that they might be making a movie.

WHAT?!?! A MOVIE!?!?! Now I will tell my friend (she also read it) about it.

I swear, that book made me want to jump into the story and tell him "You're not alone."

There was a quote in the book where Jonas asked his parents if they loved him and his dad laughed at him due to his lack of "precision of language". His mother told him that the word was overused, becoming meaningless. Then Jonas failed to understand and lied to his parents.

This quote made me think about how girls at my school say "<3 u" or "luv ya" when they mean they have a lighthearted platonic appreciation or when they say that face to face in a "meaningless" way, because their friendship seems superficial. Many of their social nuances don't make sense.

What thoughts came up when you read it for the first time?

Sorry to say that is one of the worst books I have read or heard. It was about the people who can't see colors right.

I think it was symbolic that they saw everything "in black and white". Oh well, everyone has their opinions. :)

Yes there is such a thing as being too rigid when it comes to life! If everyone spoke like they were raised going to grammar school or had their carreers assigned to them before they became teenagers, by a counsel that neither knew or really cared about them; life would be extremely sad! For anyone who has read The Giver I recommend the sequelGathering Blue :)

I had to read an exert from it for a school asignment in reading comprehension but I never read the whole thing and never plan too. I only read books that had movies bassed of them and they are only books/movies about animals.
