I'll list some old albums I've listened to for the first time. For the last month, I've been listening to punk from the 70's. First, the excellent London Calling and equally excellent The Clash from The Clash. I also listened to The Sex Pistols, which is very listenable even with the average quality of the singing. VH1 Classics has been showing a documentary late at night about The Sex Pistols, The Filth and the Fury....I will try to stay up tonight to finally see it. I also tried listening to The Ramones first album, but every song sounds the same after Blitzkrieg Bop. Great beat and energy. Also a new experience for me has been listening to Deep Purple's Machine Head, which isn't too bad. I really like the last song, Space Truckin'. The 4 disc boxed set of every Police song, Message in a Box is excellent. Most of those songs I never heard of. A wonderful find. Something more recent, I listened to James Iha's Let It Come Down. I was expecting hard rockin' but instead I got 70's adult contemporary John Denver type music. Actually suprisingly decent, but none of the songs are memorable.

My top ten list?
Nirvana's Nevermind is on there. Pretty much any of the Beatles great albums such as Revolver and Rubber Soul. Carole King's Tapestry. Roxy Music's Siren. The Who's Who's Next. Phil Collin's first two solo albums are always enjoyable listens. Led Zepellin IV. Tonight, I listened to The Smashing Pumpkins MC and the IS for the first time in 5-6 years, and forgot how great that album was. Round it off with Traffic's Traffic. That's 11 I think.

Lately, I've been on a punk rock, heavy metal kick. I consciously avoided listening to heavy metal as a kid because I was brainwashed into thinking that listening to heavy metal meant one worshipped Satan. I missed out on Led Zepellin, Iron Maiden , Van Halen and a whole host of other goodies.

I love that song Run for the Hills by Iron Maiden. I first heard it 20 years ago in summer school, when during lunch breaks, a friend would lend me his walkman and he had Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast on cassette. I heard it for the first time in 20 years yesterday. I didn't realize it was about Indians. Metallica's Master of Puppets is next on my list of to-listen-to's.
