i rarely listen to a whole album, it gets monotonous for me, and if i go to a concert , there have to be several bands/singers

Single tracks are all too brief, all too fleeting, all too slight and in most cases just a small piece of something much greater. I prefer the immersion and completeness of a finished work like an album. I wouldn't read just one chapter of a book for the same reason.

"Here Comes the Flood" by Peter Gabriel is the first that comes to mind. "A Song for You," by Gram Parsons often does the trick, too, especially a particular cover of it by Ryan Adams.

"Outside the Wall," by Pink Floyd. Album: The Wall. "All alone, or in twos, the ones who really love you walk up and down outside the wall. Some hand in hand, some gathered together in bands, the bleeding hearts and the artists make their stand. And when they've given you their all, some stagger and fall; after all, it's not easy banging your heart against some mad bugger's wall."

I spent a miserable late adolescence identifying entirely too strongly with The Wall. I saw the movie up to "Comfortably Numb" and spent the rest of the film rocking in a corner, helpless to stop crying, while my lovely cousins mocked me.

Later, in my mid-20's, I found a small handful of people who actually liked me and actually wanted to exchange friendship with me. Teaching myself to accept the concept that such a thing could be was a very difficult battle. I drew an 8x11 picture of a stone wall with a single, high, bricked-up window out of which a single brick had fallen, wrote the lyrics to "Outside the Wall" across the bottom, and hung it on my living room wall.

It stayed there for two and a half years.

"Alone," by Peter Gabriel. From the City of Angels soundtrack. "Step away then from the edge. Your best friend in life is not your mirror. Come back away. I am here and I will be forever..."

"No Rain," by Blind Melon. I have forgotten the album title. "All I can say is that my life is pretty strange. I like watching the puddles gather rain... All I can do is just pour some tea for two, and speak my point of view, but it's not sane."

"Sweet Revenge," by John Prine. From the album Sweet Revenge. "I got kicked off of Noah's Ark. I turned my cheek to unkind remarks. There was two of everything and one of me. And when the rains came tumbling down, I held my breath and I stood my ground, and I watched that ship go sailing out to sea."

"The Pilgrim," by Kris Kristofferson. I have it on a Greatest Hits album. "He's a puller, he's a picker, he's a prophet, he's a pusher, he's a pilgrim and a preacher and a problem when he's stoned. He's a walking contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction, taking every wrong direction on his lonely way back home... Still he keeps right on a-changing for the better or the worse, searching for a shrine he's never found. Never knowing if believing is a blessing or a curse, or if the going up is worth the coming down."
