as a public service to all the good beatles-loving WPers as well as the rest, below is a neat story about the origins of the beatles tune "fool on the hill"-

it turns out that the song "fool on the hill" has an "etymology" that is quite complex, but is rooted in a weird paranormal incident when paul was walking his dog [named martha] atop primrose hill overlooking london, and as he watched the sunrise, he noticed martha went missing. paul looked around for her when he encountered a strange man wearing a belted raincoat- the two exchanged pleasantries about the sublime view of the city atop the hill, then paul turned away from the man for an instant, and when he looked back the man was gone, which was strange because the nearest trees were hundreds of feet away and the man could not have run that far that fast. then again, since paul was at that time a heavy user of mind-altering weed, it could just have been that his perceptions were up in smoke. :)

I never heard this story. Thanks for sharing it! : )

I've been to conventions, too (long ago!). I even won the art contest once with a Beatle themed watercolor, and placed another year with a John Lennon speed tufted rug. : )

i don't know if it was because he was just too effed up from drugs or drink or smoke or toke to stand up erect at the mic, but john lennon recorded the vocals for "revolution" while lying on his back on the studio floor.

I wish I could see footage for that! : )

Revolution is the coolest song. I like the White Album Revolution (slow tempo) and the 45 single version (fast)... but my favorite is the version with the video. It has the John scream at the beginning, but the bop shoo be doo waps, too. The best of both worlds! I think that scream intro is the best in rock.

Tomorrow is the ten year anniversary of George's passing. Hard to imagine... I learned to draw by drawing George.

that is something i'll have to try to find on the web someplace. anyways, did you know that all the beatles were multi-instrumental, they all could play multiple instruments, including ringo who also played keyboards here and there? paul played drums on "the ballad of john and yoko." john played the organ behind george's guitar on "i want to hold your hand" [listen through a good pair of cans and you can hear it- incidentally, it was also the first beatles song to be recorded using apple's spiffy spanking new studer 4-track multitrack master deck]. george martin played keyboards on several beatles numbers as well as his first instrument, english horn- he was a classically trained musician from the start. he was the magic elixir that made the beatles the beatles that we all know and love.

It wouldn't surprise me if Lennon was trying to get a better sound by lying on his back to sing. He was notorious for shredding his voice by singing songs out of his range and by being a perfectionist. He hated his voice because he thought it didn't sound full enough; listen closely to songs where he sang and you can hear that they used two tracks for his voice to add fullness. Lying on one's back provides more relaxation of the diaphragm and thus produces a better sound. If I'm not mistaken, Povarotti recorded an entire album on his back.

Not everyone. My dad hates them along with every other band from the 1960's except for the Beach Boys.

I think their music is varied enough to at least like one song! lol

I'll listen for John's organ behind George's guitar, how neat!

I know George played many instruments. Aside from guitar, he played bass on many songs- sometimes even on his guitar but played as a bass. He played sitar, tamboura, Indian harp, harmonium... piano, uke, dobro, mandolin, and also had a uke which was set up to be like a dobro, too. I spoke to the man who sold that to him.

I had no clue. Do you know which Pavarotti it was?

john was a big fan of automated double tracking, which he also like to flange with.

listen carefully, it blends in chord-for-chord. it was john's idea to fatten up george's guitar sound.

when he stayed in a small hotel one night that had a hammond chord organ in one of the suites, he used it to compose "blue jay way."

I like their non-weird songs (meaning I'm not too fond of stuff like "I Am the Walrus")
