I just watched your music video, it's so amazing. I have one too, but unfortunately the sound and image quality is pretty poor because I don't have the right equipment/skills for recording. I've subscribed to you, but does that mean I also "friended" you? I can't remember how the system works.

Oh, thank you very much The video itself is just an expression of insanity and stands in contrast to the meaning of the song, it's extremely ironical but according to my person this irony means pain and sadness.^^... even the bad acting in the beginning of the video was meant to be bad, as a persiflage on the common sad lovesongs which appear to always be the same. frying and eating a sponge appeared to be one of the most insane things that I could do on my own.^^
Sadly it's pretty hard to record your voice through a microphone when you have to wear headphones to hear the instruments you sing to that I had recorded before I sang over it so I actually heard nothing of my voice while singing so the voice of this recording is really far below what I would be able to do.
It's not even that hard to make something like that, I used cubase to record the instruments and the voice (with a good microphone, you can record them seperately), you also need a so called audio interface (a device that you can link to your computer via usb where you can plugin the instruments and the microphone) and then I saved it as wmv or mp3 file and dragged it into the windows movie maker where I made the movie then^^
Ok, it's probably a little complicated but... not hard to do

^ Around 11/12 originals I believe. There's recordings of some of my other originals on my youtube channel as well, of varying sound quality (though nothing of good sound quality yet).

Yeah... I was actually given cubase for christmas but I still need to buy a microphone. This was literally just recorded using my mobile phone, with no other equipment.

I did also record most of my videos with my ipod, especially the ones for the piano, before I began to use a cable (it's an epiano).
But you don't even need a home studio, you are already at a stage where you only need some demo tracks recorded in a studio for little money and can search for a label to provide you a good studio, your voice is amazing, you don't have to do it yourself somebody would certainly take you.

^^^This. THIS is what I'm talking about. This, right here...
@sunshower: Simply. Amazing. I have nothing left to say.
I am curious, though. What else, besides yt, are you doing to promote your music?

This is already good demo quality, though. I'd probably cut the instrumental bit towards the end, but the thing is this song just grabs you from the beginning. It's so hard to find that kind of magic in any song, and here it is.
I've gotten acquainted with a few amateur songwriters going to workshops, and the thing I've noticed about their work is how much of their own egos they've put into their music. I'm no different... It's this sort of attitude that every song has to be a hit song. And the fact is that most of your hit songwriters aren't even that good... It's just that they write SO MUCH there's bound to be a good song in there eventually. And all you ever get to hear are the few songs that really work.
There is no ego in sunshower's song. Just quiet confidence. And I think that confidence, that BELIEF in the song really sells it. That kind of poise and grace in the delivery stands in contrast to so many songwriters that have a shaky product, they KNOW they have a shaky product, and they just persist in writing garbage in spite of constructive criticism. The more you practice writing, the more likely you're going to have a few songs that are great assets than the liabilities of the majority of your work. You have to be honest with yourself and admit that most of your songs are better staying in your notebook than embarrassing you in public. I'm personally in that stage where I'm just proud to finish anything at all, and I have a lot of work to do before I start worrying about impressing anyone. I just happen to be on a community where nobody is trying anything like what I'm doing, so it's not hard to impress anyone. I'd like to think with more practice and experience (and a lot of help) I could try to reach out to a larger audience. Sunshower clearly already has that, so I just want to know when she's going to start auditioning for band members and go on tour. I'm not a bad arranger, can handle keyboards, but I'm also a capable bassist and woodwind player. So...ya know...whatever you need...
Man, I wish I could write songs as nice as you...

I've already posted them before but I thought it would be interesting to consider two of my old compositions.
I've created them with cubase and tuxguitar 7-8 months ago.
Back then I couldn't play the piano. I didn't even have one. I've only played around with cubase^^.
In a musicians board they told me they don't have enough parts to be considered as classical.
because of that I begun to include more parts in my new pieces, the pieces i've written for the piano.
Now I'm told they've got to many parts. So I'm asking you now:
Were those compositions better if you consider the structure (ignore that they are only sampled)?

this one was never finished but it's already to be shown so...

Or should I just continue where I'm now? Or should I maybe include strings again?
Would be interesting. I think I want to write more orchestrated pieces again.

@awes: I agree that it isn't classical, but maybe that's a GOOD thing.
If you're going for an authentic Mozart/Haydn kind of sound, you're going to want a small orchestra. Two to a part--flute, oboe, bassoon, two trumpets, two horns, two trombones, chamber strings with your typical violin 1 and 2, viola, cello, and a couple of basses. Your winds are strictly for color and harmony, very little actual lead roles, lots of doubling. Your horns sticking to notes in the harmonic series, but horns tend to play high in the series. Meanwhile, your trumpets are restricted to two or three notes, and it's more like hunting call kinds of things. Trombones can play whatever, but again, they are more for color and harmony and don't tend to stand out that much. Your use of winds will tend to be very sparse. Your low strings will tend to be kind of "blocky" sounding as an accompaniment to your melody, which will usually be in your upper strings, and your violin 2 section will often play faux bourdon (parallel 6ths) or some simple counterpoint. Sometimes you'll double octaves in upper strings, but that's more of a romantic tendency than classical, and you can also put the melody in the violin 2 and have violin 1 do a descant. All the classical scores I've ever read will drop one section or the other if the composer only wants unison playing--reason being if you have two sections playing in unison the unison melody will overpower other sections. You can also do Alberti accompaniment in the upper strings and put the melody in the cellos and violas. Basses nearly always double cello.
Keep harmonies very simple. Stick to primary chords with the occasional secondary dominant (V7/V, or II7 as opposed to ii7). End all your phrases with circle progressions, use half and deceptive cadences to extend the phrase and authentic cadences for endings.
Follow the rules, avoid parallel perfect intervals, especially look out for hidden parallels, and you'll be fine.
That in a nutshell is classical style. Romantic style is an extension of classical--you just have more options. Use lots of augmented chords.
Anything tonal beyond that is jazz. Like, seriously--even Impressionist music stumbled upon the same kinds of harmonies the jazzers used, and some composers even did it on purpose.
Oh...almost forgot... Mozart was the first well-known composer to include the clarinet in the orchestra. I think Haydn included clarinets later on, but Haydn also lived well past Mozart's death. So it's something to consider.
As to the comments that some of your music doesn't have enough parts... The above comments on classical style are broad generalizations. There aren't any REALLY hard and fast rules, but you don't want to stray too far out of the box. Classical composers frequently used variations of texture and orchestration, so there's really no upper or lower limit on "parts." In listening to the examples you posted above, it sounds more like "classical" music the way Frank Zappa would have done it. And Zappa was only able to do what he did because of what the technology allowed him to do. And that really raised the expectations he and other composers had of live musicians, even if they were thoroughly annoyed by them. Machines, on the other hand, don't complain. But compared to what Zappa had gotten used to with the Synclavier, MIDI falls far short, the reason being that the Synclavier records at 1000 ppq and back in the day a "good" consumer-level sequencer MIGHT make 96 ppq. So there were timing issues Zappa didn't have to deal with. But another problem with MIDI is there are only just so many note-on/note-off events plus controller messages you can cram into one cable--a problem you didn't have with the Synclavier, not to mention later models had up to 8 MIDI outs running in parallel, which cut way down on MIDI timing problems.
Anyway...the point is someone like Zappa won't have much patience for live performers, and I can kinda see some of your music going that direction. So you have to decide how important it is to you that you really get a classical sound versus a modernist or even postmodernist sound--hence why I make such a big deal about listening to Debussy since I hear that as a sort of gateway to contemporary tonal practice. The advantage of exploring postmodernism in music is that you're not limited to any one style even in a single movement. To do postmodern style really well, you want to go for pastiche and irony. It's easy to do, but you also want to be careful because you also run the risk of sounding "kitchy" or trashy--which is my opinion of Billy Joel's attempt at classical music, and you know I'm not a fan of revivalism.
I'm a fan of Zappa, can't you tell?

To you and Awes - wow, you have no idea how much confidence you've given me. I had one friend who kept insisting I was crazy - she speaks like you do, says that I have rare songwriting talent and I should be out there on the market, but it's hard to believe that sort of thing fully about oneself (especially if you have received lots of rejection of your singing in the past).
Hearing it from somebody else too is a real confidence booster. What I do need is help, truly. I would like to form a band, but I'm not sure I'm at that stage yet. I would like to be more known first as a performer in my own right before acquiring band members. I have had a few offers though.
As to what I have been doing, it's complicated. I've been earning money as a classical singer for the last 3 days (a church scholar, weddings and funerals, etc), and at the end of 2010 I just started performing my originals live at a club in the city where I live. The first time I ever did it, I went out a single night and played at an open mic night, and instantly (after asking me to do two more practice nights for free) the club wanted to take me on for $50 an hour slot on their live music night. I did so, and I had members of another band offer to help me out with promotion and do a recording for me (for free). Unfortunately that recording just didn't come out sounding any good at all, I think because they had zero experience with recording piano backing and they couldn't get the levels right on cubase. Then the club shut down very soon after it had opened and i had started playing there, due to poor management, and I lost contact with the band. I played two other concerts (one for an Aspergers Event, one for a Pink Lady Breakfast - both of which had an extremely small turn-out and a not proper setup for equipment - I just own the stage piano, a pretty expensive one at $2000, but not mics and amps etc because I can't drive and therefore can't transport them whereas the stage piano is JUST light enough that I can get it on the bus if have to). Then I got offered a weekly job performing at a restaurant which had just opened on Wednesday nights, where they would pay me 10% of the profits. I managed that for a few weeks, but either nobody or just one person showed during this time because the restaurant was still so new and nobody knew about the music yet.
That was when I got sick. (the above covering a period of around 8 months total. There were also gaps in performing when I had massive study and living commitments (moving into a new home), and the sickness had already started by November/December really) I got really sick in March, and had to drop everything. I became a full time invalid living at home. I felt like I had every symptom in the book, swinging between extreme mood states, physical states, complete catatonia, etc. I was unable to play piano, read, or do anything at all for months and months. The one thing I held on to was my church job, where I went once a week to sing classical music for 2.5 hours on a sunday morning, although for almost two months I had to stop even that.
I was diagnosed with Ultradian Bipolar (ultra ultra rapid cycling), and since then put on several different drug concoctions, none of which have yet been fully effective. Where I'm at now is that I'm not well, but I'm improved and well enough for the first time to start playing again. I want to attempt to continue to compose also, but it's only been this week the opportunity to do so has begun.
What I need to succeed is that I know I am able to compose, and to sing, but I have terrible executive function and I am no good with sound technology at all. I was given cubase for my birthday midyear 2010 because I knew - and everyone kept telling me - that I had to produce better sounding recordings, but I haven't even learned how to use it yet because I'm that paralyzed at the thought of trying to learn how to. Plus I need to buy a mic. I want to start performing live again, but I'm not sure if I'm yet well enough, plus I'm very rusty and need to practice my repertoire.
This is my favourite recording of me playing live at the first club I spoke of:
