I could argue with you on the "greatest writer" thing, but he is pretty good. I liked A Tale of Two Cities.

It's kind of sad though because people often think that because they're made to read his books in English class, they can't be entertaining books. But that's completely wrong; they are just as fun to read as any modern best-seller, even with the old-style formal writing. I'm no literary critic though. I just think they're good books. Well, mostly. Great Expectations is kind of overrated, IMO. No offense, OP.

I was forced to read Great Expectations and Tale of Two Cities & I think David Copperfield in high school...then maybe about 10 yrs later I made my 1st trip to Canada & there in a bookstore were British paperbacks of titles I'd never seen...The Old Curiosity Shop, Little Dorrit, Bleak House...I ended buying them all & this girl at the cash register goes, 'Are you being forced to read this?

Happy Birthday, Charles Dickens! :)

I've read and enjoyed almost all of his novels. He was such a great writer and he was able to bring his characters to life. Not many authours can do that?

I agree. Dickens has a very special place in my life. I 'd love to have met him. He is by far THE greatest writer of the english language. Just the names alone that he gave his characters are amazing!

Whether he is the single greatest writer in the English language is debatable, but one cannot deny his influence on literature.

I've read a number of his books, with my particular favourite being Bleak House.
