right now im in the process of uploading videos from my high school's marching band competitions at Bands of America competitions. So i was thinking there has to be other past and present marching band members who surely have those vhs tapes or dvds laying around just dying to share with other band nerds here on wp. lets reminisce, laugh, and or positively compliment/critique those performances we either wish we could do one more time or performances we wish we could do over.

As far as I know, those kinds of interpretative formations and footworkings were not even being thought of back in my own time ('60s), but the memories you have just revived are mostly nice ones.

Edit: This band from a rival school in my hometown almost always does well in competitions:

Oh cool! I only did elementary school and middle school marching band, but our high school one was pretty cool! I remember going to the Cavalcade of the Bands once. It was pretty exciting.

the show is Celebration of the Human Spirit with Selections from Dmitri Shostakovich. I always loved playing at the RCA DOME in Indianapolis. this show was a very hard show for us to master as i and others fondly refer to it as"Shitsakovich". in my opinion, it was always the 3rd piece that would kill us, but we did the best we could.

my high school marching band was before home videotape became widespread. i am not even certain there was any professional news coverage/footage of it, despite being in a large regional parade for decades [the daffodil festival].

Our High School had a B&W TV studio and fixings, but I do not recall ever taping the marching band.

I was in it but I was terrible at marching. I don't know how I did it.

my only saving grace marching in those bands, was that i was the only one who didn't have to worry about the wind gusts whipping their sheet music out of their lyres and scattering it all over the place, as i had an eidetic memory for my sheet music and after the first playing i never had to look at it again.

where i live, we dont have that kind of showmarch bands; if i think about a marching band, it's the type that walks in front of a parade, nothing too fance or worth videotaping ;)

Search on YouTube for the IUP Marching Band, especially videos from 1980-2000 under Dr Charles Casavant.
