I've been working on a comic script off and on for the last three years and I'm curious if anyone here has finished one. Right now I'm not concerned with getting published as much as I am finishing the story (I figure I've written too much to stop but there's soooooo much story left to write). I don't think it is as much of writer's block as lack of motivation.
I started the project with a co-worker back in the retail days. He thought that it might help the motivation part to try to get the first couple of chapters illustrated but I'm not sold on throwing money at it until it's 100% written and polished, which may or may not be right. I've gotten 30-40 pages written in sort of a stage/movie script format, which I'm guessing is only about 10%-25% of the story as I imagine it.

Anyways I guess this is a general question about the writing process and how people here have gone through it.

If you did decide to turn your script into a comic, what would you do to get an illustrator? Where would you advertise?

Usually when writing comics I do a couple of things. First I plot out my story. If I have an artist I am with with I discuss it with them. This allows them to collaborate with me and share any ideas they have for the story.

I than becoming the scripting process. I find this the most difficult because when I plot everything out I think the book will be way too long. Once I begin to script I find the book begins to shorten and tighten up.

My biggest piece of advice is plot out your story first and than script it. This gives you some parameters to work within well scripting. Although many times well scripting I have come up with ideas that are way better than what my plot originally was.

redrobin62 - There was a phase where we went for an illustrator, craigslist actually turned up plenty of hits and there were a couple of guys from the university that showed interest. Plenty of artists out there, just have to find one that fits the style.

neerdowell - I think the difficulty you described is one of my hangups. I've got it plotted into three sections or volumes but the task ahead seems very daunting. I've got a majority of the first volume written, it's just a matter of tieing up loose ends and setting it up for the next phase.
What were the size and scope of the projects you've done?

I write primarily in 32 page format. This is the format that is easiest to get into stores and fit with what the comic book buying public is used to. I look at each book as a chapter of my story. I have always wanted to do an original graphic novel but the printing costs are what keeps me from doing that.

I am looking at using kickstarter as a way to work on my graphic novel.

For artists some great places to look is your local comic shop. This can work great for collaboration plus you can get done ideas of the artists work by talking to the employees at the store. Also twitter is great if you are looking to find artists.

Oh my.

Hi.

Hello.

I'm an illustrator.
I've started many comics that were ultimately abandoned due to my lack of plot-writing ability.

I do traditional media, usually with Prisma markers or colored pencils. Maybe we could do something? Most of my dA is photos or I'd link to that, but if you're interested, I could send you some samples.

Penny - I don't mind giving it an honest try. It's sort of a gritty crime/supernatural (don't worry no vampires) drama with plenty of night scenes. I've displayed an email on my profile if you want to get ahold of me.
