Is Pink Floyd not as popular as other classic rock bands?

I've met many people who claim they love older bands and when I bring up Pink Floyd, they say they like them. However, they only know a few songs and quite frankly, so little to no interest in the band. If I bring up a band like Beatles or Black Sabbath, they get really excited and know a lot about them. I don't get it, why do people know so much of these old bands, but no nothing about Pink Floyd? Are they just not as popular?

Pink Floyd are really kind of in a niche of their own with respect to most other classic rock bands. The majority of people only know of their most popular, aka radio-friendly, material like Comfortably Numb and Money. It takes a real trooper to go looking into some of their other stuff! I can't speak for Black Sabbath since I know nothing about them, but the Beatles are one of the most successful bands in history so it's obvious that people would know a good deal about them.

I'd say Pink Floyd is equally popular to other comparable bands in the day, but I'd say they attract a completely different fan base due to their extremely unique music.

I know some of their stuff but don't have every album they ever made I listen to albums. What songs are you mentioning that no one knows of. Radio tend to not play the best songs either.

They just had the 12-12-12 Concert for Sandy's victims in NYC a couple of days ago that 2 billion people around the world saw.. One of the highlights, in addition to Paul McCartney, Billy Joel and the Rolling Stones, was Roger Waters from Pink Floyd who performed nothing but Pink Floyd songs. 'Nuff said.

Yeah they sell Pink Floyd shirts at Wal-Mart, I don''t think they have anything to worry about.

I mean songs like Echoes and Dogs, no one I know seems to know these songs.

I'm just sick of seeing people like Pink Floyd on Facebook, then finding out they only listen to their popular singles! It's irritating, I feel like they're missing out on so much, but when I try to show them other songs, they don't show much interest. I kept telling one of my friends to check out Not Now John, but he never did. I showed him The Hero's Return, but he said it was boring. Another one of my friends thought Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with A Pict was on Animals.

I was never really into Pink Floyed. I was more of a Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, KISS, kindof a guy.

Echoes is long and good but I don't understand why people are like that with music. I don't have all of their albums.

Echoes is one of my favorites!

From "Animals," Pigs (Three Different Ones) is my favorite song. The instrumental segment in the middle is particularly pleasing to me.

Some earlier Pink Floyd is just weird to me. Or is simply outside of what I like. But I have most of their albums, from "Atom Heart Mother," which borders on as weird as I can take, to their very last, "The Division Bell." The only one missing in there is "The Final Cut," which with the exception of one song, sucks. Just my opinion, though.

Pigs is awesome. Blew my mind when I found out it was actually Roger Waters on the guitar and Gilmour on the bass on that song.

Hmm I don't really know, I know lots of people are familiar with Dark Side of The Moon but not so much the other albums. I like all their music and have heard all their albums I know of, I doubt I have heard every song they ever made but certainly all the full albums and I have most of them.

I'd wear a The Final Cut shirt if they made them.

I've had a totally different experience to you!

* I learnt about Pink Floyd at school once
* My cousin lent Dark Side of The Moon and The Wall to my sister when I was 9 or 10 and that was when I first heard them
* When I was about the same age and went to Turkey, I had a long talk in English with a masseur in the hotel I was in. He said earnestly that to him Pink Floyd was the best thing ever.
* One of my exes was a Pink Floyd/Syd Barett fan
* My sister and her husband almost went to see Roger Waters live, and he husband uploaded their music on the family tablet PC.
* Recently, I was at a clinic, and saw a woman who must be older than my mum wearing one of their tour t-shirts (I'm not a huge fan, so I don't want to be mistaken on which tour).
* My best friend's mum practically raised them to listen to Pink Floyd and other bands,

All that, and the fact I live in a middle-eastern country and not every trend gets here, has always led me to believe Pink Floyd were HUGE (and their Wiki claims as much, anyway).
